Mark Wallinger is the Turner Prize-winning British artist behind State Britain, Ecce Homo on the Fourth Plinth and the Labyrinth roundels on the Tube. Here you will find our take on his work, where to see Mark Wallinger now, the Tate edition you can still buy, books, and recent auction results.

Our take on Mark Wallinger

Wallinger works across painting, sculpture, film and public commissions, and keeps coming back to Britain: its politics, its horses and its public spaces. He won the Turner Prize in 2007 for State Britain, his remaking of Brian Haw’s Parliament Square protest. Accepting it, he called Haw “a remarkable man who has waged a tireless campaign against the folly and hubris of our government’s foreign policy”, as Tate records.

Horses run through his work too. His white horse for Ebbsfleet in Kent won the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project in 2009, and Tate turned it into a print in 2024. Of the site, he said: “I was thinking throughfares, Watling Street, pilgrims, all the immigrants and travellers who had come and gone to London,” as quoted on the Tate edition page.

The best way to own a Mark Wallinger right now is that Tate edition of 50, at £450 with a handful of numbers left. His editions are otherwise scarce at auction.
