Sally Kindberg is the Stockholm-born, London-based painter of funny, flat, slightly unsettling scenes of everyday life, often painted from behind. Here you will find our take on her work, where to see Sally Kindberg paintings now, how to buy her work, and our review of the HBH Gallery show where she stood out.

Our take on Sally Kindberg

Kindberg paints bars, baths, umbrellas and the backs of people’s heads in flat, clean oil colour. “Interested in both high and low brow culture, I play on the notion of the tragicomic in a society that is both civilised and ridiculous,” she writes in her artist statement. On painting people from behind, she told It’s Nice That: “You can’t see yourself from behind and you are in a way so blind to your own being. There’s vulnerability there.”

I gave Are We Really Here? at HBH Gallery 4/5, and Kindberg was the standout: her three works alone justified a visit. Not every work in that show had room to breathe, but hers did.

Sally Kindberg has no prints or editions on sale and no auction record yet. Her paintings sell through her London gallery, and a small painting is in a charity auction for War Child this autumn.
