Zineb Sedira is the British-French-Algerian artist behind the 2026 Tate Britain Commission, a free installation about cinema and liberation. Here you will find our take on her work and her £350 Tate edition.
Our take on Zineb Sedira
Sedira works across photography, performance, video and installation, drawing on family archives and the history of cinema to look at memory, migration and trauma, according to Tate.
Her Duveen Galleries commission, When Words Fall Silent, Cinema Speaks, recreates a 1970s Algerian café in Paris, with cinema seats, a 1960s mobile cinema van and two tall cinema signs in English and Arabic. Tate’s shop text ties it to the 1960s and 70s, when Algeria, independent from France in 1962, became a hub for liberation movements and activist filmmakers.
“Taking on the Tate Britain Commission feels both monumental and intimate,” she told Tate. It is free and runs to 17 January 2027.
