What Invisible Things is about

The book asks the reader to imagine a pair of magic glasses that show the things you normally cannot see. Then it goes through them one by one. Could you draw an itch? What does hope look like? It covers the sound of a dog barking, the taste of a lollipop, gratitude and grit.

Some pages take on harder ideas, such as why a sad song can make you feel happy, or how laughing spreads, even when the laugh is fake. The book ends by asking children to stop, take a deep breath and notice the invisible things in their own day.

The illustrations

Both authors made the pictures: Miller is a mixed-media artist and Pizza an illustrator. The hardback is large, at 24 x 29cm, and Counter-Print credits the book's design to Jay Marvel.

Who made it

Andy J. Pizza is an illustrator and the host of the Creative Pep Talk podcast. Sophie Miller is a mixed-media artist from Yorkshire. They live in Columbus, Ohio, with their three children, according to Chronicle Books.

The publisher also says a licensed clinical social worker who specialises in children's mental health checked the content. Kirkus called it "playful, wise", and Booklist gave it a starred review.

Who it suits

  • Parents of 5 to 8 year olds: it gives children words for feelings and senses they cannot yet name.
  • Teachers: each question in the book can start a class conversation about feelings.
  • Design-minded adults: it is stocked by Counter-Print, a specialist design bookshop.
  • Gift buyers: it is a hardback at around £13, which suits a birthday present.

The limits

It is a book of questions rather than a story, so children who want a plot may lose interest. Some of the ideas, such as gratitude or grit, will need an adult to talk them through with younger readers. For a baby, Art for Baby uses black-and-white images by modern artists instead.

The same authors have since made companion books, including Mysterious Things, Get the Giggles and Feel Calm.
