Bala Power Ring

Last updated: 4 October 2026

The Bala Power Ring is a 4.5kg weight shaped like a hoop: steel inside, soft silicone outside, about 30cm across. You hold it by the rim for presses, swings, squats and lunges, so it does the job of a kettlebell and a dumbbell in one piece. On 4 October 2026 John Lewis had the 4.5kg ring in Punch reduced from £89.99 to £45, in stock.

What the Bala Power Ring is

Bala is the American fitness brand behind the Bala Bangles wrist and ankle weights. The Power Ring is its take on a kettlebell, and Bala describes it as what you get when "the kettlebell and the dumbbell had a baby".

The ring is 12 inches across and 1.5 inches thick, which is roughly 30cm by 4cm, about the size of a dinner plate with the middle cut out. Bala holds design patents on the shape in the US and China.

How you use it

Because the weight sits evenly around the ring, you can grip it anywhere on the rim. Hold it with both hands at chest height for squats, push it overhead for a shoulder press, or swing it between your legs the way you would a kettlebell.

It also works as a prop in Pilates and barre classes, where you hold it out in front of you or pass it from hand to hand. The silicone coating means bare steel never touches the floor when you put it down.

The NHS recommends strengthening activities on at least two days a week for adults, working the legs, hips, back, stomach, chest, shoulders and arms. Squats, lunges, presses and swings with the ring work most of those muscle groups.

  • Pilates and barre regulars: 4.5kg is enough to add work to a class routine without being hard to control.
  • Anyone who wants kit they can leave out: Bala makes it in eight colours, with no sharp edges or bare metal.

The limits

It is one fixed weight. Once 4.5kg feels easy for squats and swings, you will need something heavier, and Bala does not make the ring above 10lb.

At £89.99 full price it costs more than a cast-iron kettlebell of the same weight. The £45 John Lewis price is a clearance price on one colour, so it may not last.

Amazon UK is thin on stock. On 4 October 2026 the 10lb Charcoal listing had a single used, like-new ring at £79.99, so John Lewis was the better price for a new one.

Where to buy it in the UK

John Lewis sells the 4.5kg Power Ring online with free returns. Amazon UK lists the 10lb Charcoal model, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 97 ratings, though only one used ring was on offer when we checked.

If you track your training, our page on the Google Fitbit Air covers Google's screenless fitness tracker at about £85.
