What the BeaverCraft wood carving kit is

BeaverCraft makes carving knives, gouges and wood blanks, and this is one of its DIY kits for first-time carvers. The box holds the tools and wood for one project, so there is nothing else to buy before you start.

The main tool is the C1 kids' whittling knife. It has a carbon steel blade with a rounded tip, a guard between blade and handle, an ash wood handle and a leather sheath. The round tip means a slip is less likely to stab.

What is in the box

  • C1 kids' whittling knife: carbon steel blade, rounded tip, guard, ash handle and leather sheath
  • Wood: two basswood blocks, a soft wood that is easy to cut
  • Finishing: three sheets of fine P1500 sandpaper, paints, a brush and a pencil
  • Protection: cut-resistant tape to wrap round your fingers
  • Instructions: a step-by-step booklet and a video tutorial for the spruce tree

Key facts

  • Price: £29.99 on Amazon UK

  • Project: a carved and painted spruce tree figure
  • Seller: sold by OQRETAIL and dispatched by Amazon
  • Rating: 4.5 out of 5 from 123 Amazon ratings

Who the BeaverCraft kit suits

  • Teenagers who want a first hands-on hobby: the video takes them through every cut.
  • Parents who want to carve with their child: it is a project you can do at the same table.
  • Anyone who fancies whittling but has no tools: the knife is good for further projects once the tree is done.

For another make-it-yourself present, our page on the Par cyanotype kit covers making sun prints at home for £25.

The limits

It is not a spoon-carving kit. The project is a spruce tree, and the knife has no hook blade for hollowing a spoon bowl. BeaverCraft's spoon kits are not sold on Amazon UK.

You only get two blocks of wood, so you will need more wood for a second project. BeaverCraft sells basswood blocks separately.

There is no strop or sharpener in the box. A carving knife dulls with use, so you will need one to keep it cutting cleanly.

An adult has to buy it. It is illegal to sell a knife to anyone under 18 in the UK, and bladed items bought online are age-checked on delivery.

Where to buy it in the UK

Amazon UK sells the kit at £29.99, sold by OQRETAIL and dispatched by Amazon. The full contents list is on BeaverCraft's own page for the DIY 08 kit.
