Clay at Home Kit by Jasmine Pottery x The Hepworth Wakefield

Last updated: 8 October 2026

The Hepworth Wakefield clay kit is a £35 air-drying clay set made with Jasmine Pottery Studios. That is a family pottery on Almshouse Lane, about five minutes' walk from the gallery. Both sit in the same small Yorkshire city, which is why this exists rather than another licensed craft box. The shop had 23 of them on 6 September 2026 and marks the listing "In stock, ready to ship". Nobody writes down what is in the box, but the shop's second photograph shows it, and the section below reads the contents off that picture.

Two Wakefield makers, five minutes apart

Museum shops sell a lot of craft kits, and most come from a supplier nobody names. This one does not. Jasmine Pottery Studios trades from 1 Almshouse Lane, Wakefield WF1 1DS. That is a short walk from the gallery on the Calder. It is a working studio with its own kiln, not a brand.

The studio runs classes, parties and school workshops, and it sells its own range of take-home kits alongside them. So the gallery picked a neighbour who already makes this kind of thing for a living. The clay does not travel from a warehouse in another county either. It is a small point, but it is the whole argument for this version over a generic one.

The contents, which nobody writes down

Here is the honest position on the text. The product page carries a title, a price, a stock line and two empty accordions. They are labelled "About the artist" and "Shipping information". Neither holds anything. There is no contents list, no materials, no dimensions and no age guidance, and Jasmine Pottery's own site skips this kit too, because it belongs to the gallery.

The pictures are a different story. The shop's second photograph is an open-box shot, and everything in the kit is laid out in it. So rather than guess, we read the contents off that image.

Open kraft box with orange tissue holding a clay pouch, wooden tools in a calico bag, six paint tubes, a white palette and a printed guide. The Hepworth Wakefield Shop's own open-box photograph, which is the only place the contents appear.

Two things that follow from that. The belly band on the closed box says "includes step by step guide", which the photograph confirms, and the paint pack is in the box rather than an upsell. So the £35 covers the clay, the tools, the guide and the paint together.

What the photograph cannot tell you is the weight of clay, so that stays unverified. If it matters before you order, ring the studio on 07857 751778, or use the "Ask a question" link on the listing.

What Jasmine Pottery puts in its own kits

The studio does publish full contents for the kits it sells directly, and those run from £20 to £42. Comparing that list with the gallery photograph is what tells you where the £35 goes.

Their own range covers a plant pot, a gnome, a monster for children, a snowman and a Highland cow. There are also paw prints and a charity cat made with Cats Protection, plus kits sized for two people and for six. The £35 gallery kit sits above every single kit in that range, and above most of the pairs, which the paint pack and the printed guide go a long way to explaining.

Air-drying clay, so there is no kiln to find

The studio's range is air-drying throughout. That is the part that makes a kit like this work at a kitchen table. Nothing goes in an oven and nothing comes back to the studio for firing. What you make is finished when it dries.

There is a trade-off. Air-dry clay holds neither water nor food safely, so a pot made this way takes pens and keys rather than liquid. For something fired and glazed, book one of the studio's classes instead.

The gallery on the other end of the walk

The Hepworth Wakefield opened in 2011 on the bank of the Calder. David Chipperfield designed it, in concrete cast in situ, and it took Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2017. Inside sits Wakefield's collection of more than 500 works of modern British and contemporary art, begun in 1923. Permanent rooms hold Barbara Hepworth's plasters, prototypes and working models.

Hepworth herself came from Wakefield, born there in 1903. So this is a hometown collection rather than a name borrowed for a building. Exhibition entry costs £13. Under 18s, Wakefield district residents and members go free, and a National Art Pass halves it.

Delivery, collection and what stock actually means here

Most museum shops tell you a thing is available and leave it there. This one publishes a live unit count. That makes it the most trustworthy stock line we have found on any gallery shop, and on 6 September 2026 it read 23 units.

OptionCost
Collection from the Hepworth Wakefield ShopFree, usually ready in 2 to 4 days
Royal Mail Tracked 48£5
Royal Mail Tracked 24£10
UPS£12
Worldwide£45

So it is £40 delivered on the cheapest tracked option, and £35 if you are going anyway. The gallery earns the trip on its own, so collection is the sensible one.

Who it suits

The Hepworth Wakefield clay kit works for a child who wants to make something with their hands. It works just as well for an adult who has never touched clay, because air-dry forgives mistakes and the tutorials fill in the technique. It also travels well as a present, since a box of clay posts more easily than a finished pot.

It suits you less if you want a glazed, waterproof object at the end. Nor is it the cheapest way to buy air-dry clay, by a distance. You pay for the pairing and the tutorials rather than for the raw material.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Hepworth Wakefield clay kit?

£35 direct from the Hepworth Wakefield Shop, checked on 6 September 2026. Delivery is £5 on Royal Mail Tracked 48, or free if you collect.

What is in the kit?

Neither the gallery nor Jasmine Pottery writes it down, but the shop's open-box photograph shows a pouch of clay, wooden tools and a wire trimmer in a calico bag, six 12ml acrylic paints, a six-well palette, a printed step-by-step guide and a studio card. The weight of clay is not published anywhere.

Do I need a kiln?

No. Jasmine Pottery's Clay at Home range uses air-drying clay, so nothing needs firing. The trade-off: the result holds neither water nor food safely.

Is it suitable for children?

The studio makes four children's kits and calls its clay softer than leading brands, and better for smaller hands. Nobody publishes an age banding for the gallery version, so treat it as a supervised activity rather than a toy.

Who is Jasmine Pottery Studios?

A family-run pottery at 1 Almshouse Lane, Wakefield WF1 1DS, with its own kiln. It runs classes, parties and school workshops, and it opens Thursday afternoons and Friday to Sunday.

Is it in stock?

Yes. The listing read "In stock, ready to ship" with 23 units on 6 September 2026. The Hepworth shop is unusual in publishing a live count, so recheck the number on the day.
