Beaphar's liver-flavour cat toothpaste is an enzyme paste for cats and dogs that is free of fluoride and xylitol, both of which are toxic to pets. Beaphar says it suits cats and dogs of any breed from 8 weeks old. The 100g tube was £4.74 on Amazon UK, sold by Amazon, when we checked on 5 October 2026, with 4.3 out of 5 from more than 15,000 ratings.
Human toothpaste is not safe for cats. Most of it contains fluoride, and some contains xylitol, and a cat swallows whatever goes on the brush. International Cat Care also points out that cats find human toothpaste unpleasant and that it can upset their stomach.
A cat toothpaste is made to be swallowed and flavoured so the cat accepts it. Beaphar's is liver flavoured and contains enzymes, which the maker says help control plaque and tartar and freshen breath when you brush regularly.
Because the tube has no brush, you will need a soft pet toothbrush or a finger brush as well. The full product details are on Beaphar's UK product page.
Beaphar says brushing two or three times a week makes a clear difference, and that every day is best. International Cat Care also recommends once a day. Aim for about 15 seconds on each quarter of the mouth, so a minute in total.
Most cats need to be introduced to it slowly. Over a period of days or weeks, these are the stages:
Kittens take to it fastest, but an older cat can learn too. It just takes more patience, so stop each session before the cat gets fed up.
Toothpaste helps keep clean teeth clean. It will not remove tartar that has already built up, and it does not treat sore gums. If your cat has red or bleeding gums, bad breath that does not improve, drooling or trouble eating, book a vet check before you start brushing.
It suits anyone starting a brushing routine with a cat or kitten, and households with both a cat and a dog, because one tube covers both. At under £5 it is also a low-cost way to find out whether your cat will accept brushing at all.
If your cat will not tolerate a brush, International Cat Care suggests asking your vet about dental diets and chews instead.
Buy Beaphar toothpaste for cats and dogs
No. Human toothpaste usually contains fluoride and sometimes xylitol, both toxic to cats, and cats swallow it. Use a toothpaste made for pets, such as Beaphar's.

Once a day is ideal. Beaphar says two or three times a week still makes a clear difference.
Yes. Beaphar says it is suitable from 8 weeks old.
Rubbing it on with a finger is a good first step, but brushing removes far more plaque. Beaphar also makes a separate no-brush tooth gel for pets that will not accept a brush.
