The Forest Fire candle is a soy wax scented candle from Good Candles, a small candle maker in Kent. It smells of campfires and late nights at festivals, with a note of whisky. What the Forest Fire candle is

Forest Fire was the first candle Good Candles made. The scent brief asked for warm fires on a beach, a burnt-out forest and the charred-log smell on your fingers after lighting a fire in the garden. The founder, Olly, wanted it to feel cosy and familiar.

The name is deliberate too. Good Candles chose it to start a conversation about the climate, which is why each sale pays for trees.

The idea for the scent came from an episode of Netflix's Chef's Table about the Argentine chef Francis Mallmann, who cooks over open fires in Patagonia.

Where the money goes

Every Forest Fire candle funds 20 trees, planted in Madagascar by Eden Projects through Ecologi. You can see the trees planted so far on the Good Candles forest page on Ecologi.

Good Candles gives part of every sale to charity across its range, and it posts its monthly donations in its Instagram story highlights.

Who the Forest Fire candle suits

It suits anyone who likes smoky, woody scents rather than florals, and people who miss festivals or nights round a fire. Because the box is illustrated, it is ready to give as it is.

It also makes a good present for someone who cares about where their money goes. For more ideas, see our gifts for homebodies guide.

The limits

Good Candles does not publish a burn time or the candle's weight, so it is hard to compare it on value with bigger brands.

At £35, it costs more than most supermarket candles. Part of the price pays for the trees, which you may count as a plus.

Finally, a smoky scent will not suit everyone. If you prefer something floral, the same maker's Fred's Garden candle smells of a British garden.

Where to buy it in the UK

Good Candles sells Forest Fire direct from its own shop, and the candle is made in Kent.
