What the Merrell Hydro Moc is

Merrell, the American outdoor footwear brand, makes the Hydro Moc for wearing in and out of water: on the beach, round a pool, on a boat or at a campsite. The upper is EVA foam, a similar material to a Croc. Because the upper and sole are moulded together, there are no seams or laces to soak up water.

The holes let water run out and air in. Meanwhile a translucent rubber sling behind the heel stops the shoe slipping off as you walk.

• Drains as you walk: the perforated upper lets water out after a swim or a paddle.
• Holds your heel: the rear sling contains 10% recycled rubber and keeps the shoe on your foot.
• Rinses clean: sand and mud wash off the foam under a tap.
• Uses algae foam: BLOOM foam is made partly from algae biomass harvested from polluted water, and Merrell says harvesting it leaves the water cleaner.

The limits of the Merrell Hydro Moc

Fit is the main complaint. CleverHiker's reviewer found it runs small, with her big toe pressing on the top of the shoe. She also felt a blister starting after about a mile on a trail. And because it only comes in whole sizes, half sizes have to guess.

Grip on dry trails is weak next to dedicated water sandals, and grit gets trapped under your foot through the holes. So it suits the beach and the campsite rather than long walks.

The reviewer also notes it is not designed for wearing with socks, which rules it out as a cold-weather slipper.

Merrell UK sells both versions for £50 with free delivery and free returns, which helps if you need to swap sizes. Amazon UK has older Hydro Moc listings, but I struggled to find more than single sizes with one to three pairs left. So Merrell's own shop is the simpler place to buy a pair.
