What they are

Toraphene Ltd makes compostable bags reinforced with graphene, which is what lets them be thinner and stronger than a typical compostable liner without tearing. The company is UK-based and states the products are made in Britain.

The caddy liners come in 8, 15 and 20 litre sizes, priced from £29.99 depending on size and roll count. The 8 litre is the one to look at for a litter tray waste bin, since the PETKIT bin is 7 litres.

Why we use them for cat litter

There is a logic here that gets missed. If you have already chosen a plant-based, biodegradable litter, sealing it inside a single-use plastic bag rather undoes the point. These liners are the only way we have found to marry the two up.

PETKIT sells no official biodegradable liner for its waste bins, which is an odd gap for a brand leaning this hard on a clean, considered image. Toraphene liners fit the bin properly, and across two years and two trays we have never had one leak.

Honest limitations

They have split on us twice. On both occasions we simply used another bag and moved on, so it is an annoyance rather than a failure, but it is worth knowing before you buy a roll of 500.

The bigger caveat is the certification. EN 13432 and OK Compost Industrial mean industrial composting, not your garden heap. Used cat litter cannot go into UK food waste collections either, so in practice these end up in general waste and will not fully break down there.

We still think it is worth it: a compostable bag that does not fully compost is made of less problematic material than a plastic one that never will. But anyone buying them purely for a clear conscience should know exactly what they are getting.

Are they home compostable?

No. They are certified to EN 13432 and OK Compost Industrial, which is industrial composting. They are not certified for a home compost heap.

Can I put cat litter in the food waste bin using these?

No. UK food waste collections do not accept cat litter or animal waste, whatever the bag is made of. Used litter goes in general waste.
