Libreria Book Subscription

Last updated: 19 October 2026

The Libreria book subscription sends one hand-wrapped book a month, picked by the staff of Libreria, the independent bookshop off Brick Lane in east London. You choose Fiction, Non-fiction or a Mix of both. The price depends on where the books are going and which plan you pick, so you only see it after filling in Libreria's short sign-up form.

What the Libreria book subscription is

Libreria opened on Hanbury Street in February 2016, run by the people behind the Second Home workspaces. It is known for shelves sorted by theme rather than genre, and for asking customers to leave their phones alone while they browse.

The subscription brings that idea to your door. Each month the team chooses a book, wraps it by hand and sends it out in the first week of the month. As a result, you get something you might not have picked yourself, which is the point of the shop.

Fiction, Non-fiction or Mix

  • Fiction: novels and stories chosen by the Libreria team.
  • Non-fiction: factual books chosen by the same team.
  • Mix: a blend of both, so one month might be a novel and the next an essay collection.

Libreria keeps lists of past picks for each plan on Bookshop.org, so you can see the kind of books each one sends before you choose.

How to sign up and see the price

  • Open the Libreria subscription page.
  • Step 1: fill in your contact details and the recipient's address, and choose Fiction, Non-fiction or Mix.
  • Step 2: Libreria shows you the plans and prices for that address, and you pay there.

The price is not on the page before the form, because it depends on the delivery location and the plan. I did not fill the form in, so I cannot quote a figure here.

Key facts

  • What you get: one hand-wrapped book a month, delivered in the first week of the month
  • Plans: Fiction, Non-fiction or Mix
  • Price: depends on location and plan, shown after the sign-up form
  • Delivery area: UK and Northern Ireland only
  • Questions: Libreria answers by email at [email protected]

Who it suits

  • Readers in a rut: a human pick each month breaks the habit of buying the same kind of book.
  • Gift buyers: you can enter someone else's address, so it works as a present that keeps arriving.
  • Fans of independent shops: the money goes to a small bookshop rather than a big online retailer.

The limits

The price is hidden until you hand over contact details, which makes it hard to compare with other book subscriptions.

It only delivers in the UK and Northern Ireland, so it will not work for friends abroad.

Finally, you do not choose the book. That is the appeal, but if the recipient has firm tastes, a bookshop gift card may suit them better.

Visiting the shop

Libreria is at 65 Hanbury Street, London E1. According to its website, it is closed on Mondays, open 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday, and 12pm to 6pm on Sunday.
