  1. Sign up: registration is free and gives you an address at every warehouse.
  2. Shop: use your Forward2me address as the delivery address at checkout.
  3. Request your shipment: once the parcel arrives, log in, choose a courier and pay for the onward leg.

When it is useful

The German address is the one most UK shoppers will want. Plenty of small European makers only deliver inside the EU, and a German address gets you past that.

For example, the Open Funk re:Mix blender is made in Berlin and only ships within the EU. In that case you would order it to your Forward2me German address and send it on to the UK from there.

The US and Japan addresses work the same way for American and Japanese shops.

The costs to plan for

The shipping quote is only part of the bill. First, you still pay the shop's own delivery charge to the warehouse, if it has one.

Second, UK import charges apply. According to GOV.UK, goods worth more than £135 in total carry VAT, and duty can apply as well. The courier collects these before delivery or when you pick the parcel up.

Finally, storage is only free for 30 days. After that, a daily fee builds up on each parcel until it ships.

The limits

Forwarding adds time. Your parcel makes two trips, so it arrives later than a direct delivery would.

Returns are harder too. Sending something back to a European shop from the UK means paying for international postage yourself.

In addition, some goods cannot travel. Forward2me keeps lists of prohibited and restricted items, so check them before you order anything with batteries, liquids or chemicals.

Lastly, an EU appliance arrives with a European plug. You will need a UK adapter or a plug change for anything electrical.
