Claude Cowork: What It Is and What It Costs in the UK

Claude Cowork is the part of Anthropic's Claude that does whole tasks for you rather than answering one prompt at a time. You give it an outcome, and it works across your files, folders and apps to bring back a finished spreadsheet, report or tidy folder. It comes with Claude's paid plans, and when I checked Anthropic's UK pricing on 14 October 2026, Claude Pro was £18 a month, or £15 a month billed yearly.
What Claude Cowork is
Cowork brings the engine behind Claude Code, Anthropic's coding tool, to everyday knowledge work. Instead of a back-and-forth chat, you describe the result you want, and Claude plans the steps, reads and writes files, and shows you what it is doing as it goes.
Anthropic has now folded Cowork into Claude itself. Its pricing page reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude", so chat and tasks start from the same message box, and the change is rolling out to Pro and Max first.
What Claude Cowork does
- Works with your files: with the Claude desktop app open, it can read, create and edit documents, spreadsheets and folders on your computer.
- Builds documents: reports, spreadsheets and slide decks from your notes and source files.
- Uses your browser: it can open sites and work through them in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, asking permission first.
- Scheduled tasks: type /schedule and Claude runs a task on a timetable. These run in the cloud, so your computer does not need to be awake.
- Projects: related tasks can share their own files and memory.
Claude Cowork UK prices
- Free: £0. Cowork is not included.
- Pro: £18 a month, or £15 a month when you pay £180 for the year.
- Max: from £90 a month, with 5 or 20 times the usage of Pro.
- Team and Enterprise: priced per seat for businesses.
Anthropic says Cowork uses up your plan's limits faster than ordinary chat, so heavy daily use is where Max starts to make sense. The current figures are on Anthropic's pricing page.
What you need to run it
You need a paid Claude plan. For anything on your own computer, such as local files or your browser, you also need the Claude desktop app for macOS or Windows, open and connected. Cowork also works on the web at claude.ai, with mobile in beta. Anthropic's get started guide covers setup.
Who Claude Cowork suits
- People buried in admin: sorting files, pulling reports together and repeating the same weekly tasks.
- Researchers and analysts: turning a folder of sources into a summary or a spreadsheet.
- Freelancers and small teams: scheduled tasks can run recurring jobs without anyone at a desk.

The limits
It is not free. Cowork needs at least Claude Pro, and the free plan does not include it.
Tasks use your limits quickly. A long job can use up a Pro plan's allowance faster than chatting does.
Local work needs the desktop app running. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud, but anything touching your own files or browser needs the app open.
Computer use, where Claude controls apps on your screen, is still a research preview, so expect it to be slower and less reliable than working with files.
