Refurbished tech UK buying splits into two questions, and most guides only answer the first. The first is which marketplace to use. The second, and the one that decides whether you save anything, is which products are actually worth buying used. On laptops and iPads the answer is most of them. On AirPods, as of September 2026, it is two models out of nine. Each guide below takes one category and gives the current prices, the grading rules that apply to it and the honest gap against buying new.

Where refurbished still saves money, and where it has stopped
The saving is wide on computers and narrow on small, cheap, battery-driven things.
The rule of thumb that holds across every guide here is about the gap rather than the percentage. A refurbished MacBook or iPad saves hundreds of pounds, so a cosmetic scuff and a used battery are easy to accept. A refurbished pair of earbuds saves about twenty pounds, and at that distance a full manufacturer warranty and an untouched battery are worth more than the money.
Two things have changed in 2026 and both are worth knowing before you shop. Condition grades have stopped tracking price reliably on small items: on several Back Market AirPods listings Excellent now costs less than Good. And Amazon Renewed has become the cheaper marketplace on most Apple audio, while Back Market keeps the wider range. Neither of those was true a year ago.

What a refurbished grade actually promises
Grades describe the scuffs. They say almost nothing about the battery.
Cosmetic grades are cosmetic. Back Market sorts stock into Fair, Good, Excellent and Premium, and its own grade page says plainly that these classify devices "based on their cosmetic condition". Amazon Renewed uses its own wording, with "Refurbished - Excellent" the grade you see most often on Apple products.
The battery floor is the same everywhere, and it is a floor. Back Market promises a minimum of 80% battery health across its marketplace. That is a minimum, not a target, and its grade definitions and inspection lists are published for phones, tablets, watches, laptops and consoles rather than for every category it sells.
Only Apple fits a new battery. Apple Certified Refurbished replaces the battery and the outer shell on iOS devices, ships the original accessories in a new white box and carries a one-year warranty. It is the best standard in the market and the hardest to buy, because stock comes and goes without notice.
Twelve months of cover is the norm. Amazon Renewed carries a one-year guarantee. Back Market gives a 12-month warranty from the individual seller, with 30 days of free returns. Wear and tear sits outside both, and Back Market names gradual battery degradation as an example of it.

Does refurbished tech come with a warranty?
Yes, twelve months as standard from Back Market, Amazon Renewed and Apple alike. What differs is what falls outside it. Normal wear and tear, including a battery that gradually fades, is excluded rather than covered.
Is refurbished the same as second-hand?
No. A second-hand item is sold as it is. A refurbished one has been inspected, tested, cleaned and reset, and it is sold with a warranty and a cosmetic grade. Apple goes further still and fits a new battery and a new outer shell.
