The condition grade has stopped meaning anything in money

The refurbished AirPods UK market should work like every other second-hand market. Pick a cosmetic grade, accept a scuff, save real money. That is not what the listings say today. On Back Market on 22 September, AirPods Pro 2 in Excellent condition cost £148. The same earbuds in Good condition cost £155. The tattier pair is the dearer one. Meanwhile a brand-new AirPods 5 costs £119 at Apple and Argos, only £28 more than Back Market's refurbished AirPods 3 from 2021. The question worth answering, then, is not which grade to buy. It is whether refurbished wins at all, and on which model.

Why refurbished AirPods UK prices have stopped making sense

Five of the ten Back Market listings price the better grade below the worse one.

Refurbished pricing usually works as a ladder. Fair is battered and cheap. Excellent is nearly new and dear. You decide what a scratch is worth to you. On AirPods that ladder has collapsed, and on five listings it runs backwards.

Here is what Back Market's own grade selector showed me on 22 September. AirPods Pro 2 from 2023, on two separate listings: Good £155 and Excellent £148, then Good £157 and Excellent £149. AirPods 3rd gen: Good £92 and Excellent £91 with MagSafe, Good £93 and Excellent £92 with Lightning. AirPods Pro 1st gen from 2019: Good £96, Excellent £94. The 2021 Pro 1 costs £92 in either grade. Fair was sold out on every one of those listings, so the budget grade does not exist at all. Only the AirPods Max ladder runs the right way, from £330 in Fair to £350 in Excellent, with Good sold out.

There is a simple reason for it. Back Market is a marketplace rather than a shop. So each grade on a listing shows whichever seller is cheapest in that grade today. When only one seller holds Fair stock and three are fighting over Excellent, the better grade wins on price. Consequently the grade tells you about the scuffs and almost nothing about the money.

So the decision that matters is not Fair against Excellent. It is refurbished against new, and that one turns out to be much closer than the discount badges suggest.

Route 01 / Amazon Renewed

Amazon Renewed undercuts Back Market, and runs thin

Cheaper than Back Market on every shared model. The ratings are middling, though, and the stock is shallow.

Two more sit on the same shelf and are worth knowing about. A renewed AirPods 3rd generation was £89 on 22 September, just £2 under Back Market's £91 for the same generation. The renewed AirPods Pro from 2021 was £76.64 on 18 September and unavailable on 22 September. When I searched on 18 September, Amazon had no AirPods Pro 2 in Renewed at all. That is the one thing Back Market has and Amazon lacks.

Route 02 / Back Market

Back Market has the range, and it is no longer the cheapest

The widest range of the four routes, and dearer than Amazon or CeX on almost everything.

Back Market has been my default for refurbished tech for years. My Back Market review covers what the platform is like to buy from. On AirPods specifically the picture has changed. On 22 September every listing I checked came in above the matching Amazon Renewed one, though by less than before. AirPods 3 was £91 against £89. AirPods 4 with noise cancelling was £111 against £99.99. AirPods Max was £330 against £328.

What it still has is the AirPods Pro 2, at £148 in Excellent condition and £155 in Good on 22 September. Amazon had no Renewed listing for that model when I searched on 18 September. CeX sold the same 2023 Pro for £110 in grade C and £138 in grade B on 22 September, so check there first. Back Market's £148 sits £71 under Apple's £219 for the newer Pro 3.

The fee that is not in the price. Every listing carries a Quality Assurance Fee. It starts at £0.49 and rises as a percentage of your basket. It appears at checkout rather than on the product page. The tile price understates what you actually pay. Delivery is free and returns are free for 30 days.

The honest problem. Back Market is a marketplace, so you are buying from whoever holds stock in that grade. On 18 September the seller on the AirPods 4 listing was TOMES. Each seller carries its own 12-month warranty. Back Market steps in only if that seller fails to answer a claim within five working days.

Route 03 / CeX

CeX is cheapest on more models than anyone, and the warranty runs five years

Eight of the nine models were cheapest here on 22 September, and everything CeX sells carries a free five-year warranty.

CeX is the second-hand chain with a shop on most UK high streets. On eight of the nine models it was also the cheapest of every refurbished AirPods UK route I checked on 22 September. On 19 September it listed 84 Apple headphone products: 21 at grade A, 31 at grade B and 31 at grade C. CeX calls those Mint, Good and Working.

The five-year warranty is the part nobody else matches. CeX gives a free five-year warranty on everything bought in a store or on webuy.com, with consumables such as removable batteries excluded. Amazon Renewed and Back Market both give twelve months. That is four extra years of cover on a product whose main failure is the battery.

The AirPods Max, and the grade ladder

The AirPods Max is the headline. On 22 September a grade C pair of the original Lightning AirPods Max was £185, in stock online, with grade B at £245. The newer USB-C model in Midnight was £280 in grade B. Amazon Renewed wanted £328 for a USB-C pair and Back Market £330 for its cheapest. So even the USB-C pair came in £48 under Amazon Renewed and £50 under Back Market. CeX will also buy that pair back later, at £173 in cash or £201 in voucher on the day I looked.

And the grade ladder works here, which is the opposite of Back Market. Every CeX price rises with the grade. On 22 September AirPods 2nd generation ran £58 at C and £70 at B. AirPods 3rd generation ran £72 and £82. AirPods Pro 1 ran £85 and £100. AirPods 4 ran £75, £90 and £105 across C, B and A, and AirPods Pro 3 ran £150, £170 and £198. Pay more, get a better-looking pair.

The honest problem. Each listing is a single unit rather than a stock line, so there is nothing behind it if somebody else buys first. CeX publishes no battery-health figure anywhere on the page, where Back Market at least promises 80% across its marketplace. Grade C means visible marks, and on AirPods that usually shows on the case rather than the buds.

Route 04 / Outlet shops

Currys, Tesco and Argos all sell refurbished AirPods, just not on their own sites

Their eBay outlets carry the graded stock the main websites say they do not have.

Currys, Tesco and Argos each run an official outlet shop on eBay. They are the only refurbished AirPods UK route I found for the 2026 AirPods Max 2, and the Currys shop runs CeX close on the Pro 3. The shops are easy to miss, because none of the three links to its outlet from its main product pages.

Currys Clearance is the outlet to know. On 22 September it sold a refurbished AirPods Pro 3 at £156.30 against £219 new, and by 19 September 588 people had bought one. That is £22.70 under Amazon Renewed, £43.70 under AO's new price and £6.30 over CeX's grade C pair. The same shop listed AirPods 4 with noise cancelling at £121.30 and plain AirPods 4 at £86.30 on 22 September, and the 2026 AirPods Max 2 at £427.15 on 19 September. Its eBay feedback ran 99.1% positive across 518,000 items sold on 19 September.

What the Currys grade letters mean

Read the grade letter, because Currys means something specific by it. Currys sets out its grades on its own refurbished tech page. Grade A is as new. Grade B is very good, with cosmetic wear, and may carry non-original parts. Grade C is fair, with noticeable wear and tear, working fully. Every grade carries a 12-month Currys technical guarantee, and Currys sells refurbished stock online only. That £156.30 Pro 3 is a grade C, so expect marks on the case.

Tesco, Argos and musicMagpie

Tesco and Argos carry stock too. On 19 September Tesco's outlet sold plain AirPods 4 at £79.59 and the noise-cancelling version at £119.79. On the same day Argos sold a refurbished AirPods Max in Midnight at £338.99, £58.99 above CeX's USB-C pair.

musicMagpie sells through eBay and not through its own store at the moment. Its own store carried no AirPods at all on 19 September, because the AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and earphones pages each returned no products. On eBay that day it listed an AirPods Max in Sky Blue at £338.99 and the 2024 USB-C model in Midnight at £381.99.

The honest problem. Outlet stock is one-off and it moves fast, so a listing that is there this morning can be gone by the afternoon. On 19 September Tesco's AirPods 4 also dropped from £84.79 to £72.07 with an eBay coupon, and musicMagpie's Sky Blue AirPods Max from £338.99 to £288.99. Those coupons expire. Work from the number eBay shows you at checkout rather than the one in the search results.

Route 05 / Apple Certified Refurbished

Apple has the best refurbished standard and nothing to sell

A new battery, a new outer shell and a one-year warranty, on a shelf that has been empty for days.

Apple's refurbished terms beat every marketplace on substance, and by a wide margin. Apple fits refurbished iOS devices with a new battery and a new outer shell. Each one ships with the original accessories and cables, a brand-new white box and the standard one-year limited warranty. You can add AppleCare afterwards. Savings run to about 15%.

Then you open the page. Apple's refurbished AirPods store lists four models in its filter. Two are AirPods 3rd generation, with a Lightning case or MagSafe. The other two are AirPods Pro 2. Every one returned "The product you're looking for is currently unavailable". I checked on 17 and 18 September, and again on 22 September.

The only way to catch a restock. Set a reminder and keep looking. When stock does land, this is the only route with a new battery rather than one merely tested above 80%. Apple does not publish a restock schedule, so there is nothing to sign up to. Check the page rather than waiting for an email.

Route 06 / New

Buying new, which is cheaper than you think

Argos undercuts Currys by £40 on the same earbuds, and AO undercuts Apple by £19 on the Pro 3.

Currys, Argos and AO sell no refurbished AirPods on their own websites, which is exactly why their outlet shops are easy to miss. New is all the main sites do, and the spread between the three is wide enough to change the refurbished question on its own.

Argos is the cheapest for a new AirPods 4. On 22 September a new AirPods 4 was £99 and the noise-cancelling version £129. On 18 September Currys charged £119 and £169 for the same two products, £40 more on the model most people choose between.

AO is the cheapest for a new AirPods Pro 3. On 22 September it sold at £200 to anybody, £19 under Apple's £219, and £196 if you pay for AO Membership. Treat £200 as the real number, because the membership price costs a subscription to unlock.

Currys matched Apple exactly on everything current on 18 September. AirPods 5 £119, AirPods 5 with the wireless case £139, AirPods Pro 3 £219, AirPods Max 2 £499. There is no reason to look there first.

The Lloyds Apple Store is not a discount either. I opened it from the Lloyds app on 17 September 2026. It showed AirPods Pro 3 at £219 and AirPods 5 from £119. Those match Apple's own prices to the penny. It carries no refurbished AirPods at all. You also need a Lloyds account plus a separate store account before you can see anything. The Lloyds switching offer is worth having on its own terms. The Apple store attached to it is not, at least not on AirPods.

CeX is cheapest on eight of the nine models, and a high-street outlet takes the ninth.

Compare / Every price

Refurbished AirPods UK prices against new, model by model

Nine models, four refurbished routes, and the last column is the one to read.

Every price in the table was read on 22 September 2026, except the AirPods Max 2 outlet price, which dates from 19 September. Back Market's column shows the cheapest grade in stock, and on three of its rows that grade is Excellent rather than Fair. Where the cheapest-new column says not sold new, Apple has stopped selling the model, so there is no new price to beat.

What the last column shows

The pattern in the last column is the finding. CeX is cheapest on eight of the nine models, and the Currys outlet on the ninth. Amazon Renewed and Back Market win none. Two margins are narrow: on the AirPods Pro 3 CeX is £6.30 under the Currys outlet, and on the AirPods Pro 1 it is £7 under Back Market. On the AirPods Max, though, a grade C Lightning pair at CeX is £143 under Amazon.

Read first / The small print

What you actually get when you buy refurbished AirPods

A tested battery rather than a new one, twelve months of cover, and no original box.

The battery is the whole question, and nobody shows you its number. Every refurbished AirPods UK listing promises a tested battery, and not one of them prints the figure. Back Market promises "minimum 80% battery health with 100% charge capacity" across its marketplace. Its published grade definitions and its 100-point inspection list cover smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops and games consoles. No audio category exists at all. Nobody shows you a battery figure for a specific pair of AirPods before you buy, the way they do for a phone.

And the warranty will not help you when that battery fades. Back Market's warranty certificate rules out normal wear and tear, under the seller warranty and under your statutory rights alike. Its own example is "gradual battery degradation". A dead earbud on day 200 is a warranty claim. An earbud that only lasts two hours is not.

iOS will not tell you either. Unlike an iPhone, AirPods have no battery health percentage anywhere in Settings. You get a charge level per bud and per case, and that is all. Charge both buds fully, play something at a normal volume, then time how long you get. Compare that against Apple's stated figure for the model. Do it inside the return window.

What arrives in the box

Not the Apple box. Back Market listings promise a compatible charging cable rather than a named Apple one. Amazon Renewed ships in a plain brown box. Apple's own refurbished route is the only one that ships in white packaging with the original accessories, and it has nothing in stock.

Cover, side by side. Amazon Renewed carries a one-year guarantee and free returns. Back Market gives a 12-month seller warranty, 30 days of free returns, and an Express Replacement service for six months. Currys gives a 12-month technical guarantee on its outlet stock. CeX gives five years. Buying new from Apple, Argos, Currys or AO gives you Apple's own one-year warranty and the option to add AppleCare. On a £99 purchase the twelve-month options are close enough not to decide it. On a £280 pair of AirPods Max, five years against one is the whole argument.

Money back / Cashback

Cashback on AirPods, and the protection you give up to get it

Two per cent back on a purchase made direct from Apple, paid for with a chunk of your consumer rights.

Two per cent back on an Apple gift card

Apple runs no public discount and no scheme a reader can use. On paper, then, no way exists to get money back on an Apple purchase. There is one, though. JamDoughnut pays 2% on Apple gift cards, and an Apple gift card buys hardware, not just apps. Apple's own gift card page lists what they cover: "Products, accessories, apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, iCloud+ and more". I bought a MacBook that way. The route works on real hardware rather than just in theory.

On AirPods Pro 3 at £219 from Apple, 2% is £4.38 back, which brings it to about £214.62. That is still £14.62 more than AO charges for the same earbuds, so the cashback narrows the gap and does not close it.

What Currys and Argos actually pay

In my own JamDoughnut app on 17 September 2026, Currys paid 3% and Argos paid 2.75%. Rates move and vary by user, so open your own app before you count on one. TopCashback is the other public option, and its Currys page rewards reading past the headline. It advertises "up to 15% cashback". Earbuds fall under "All Other Online Purchases", though, which pays 1%. Argos through TopCashback pays up to 1.1% for new customers and 0.5% for everyone else, and it excludes gift cards outright.

Sprive pays your mortgage rather than you

Sprive is a different mechanic, and it suits a narrower group. Its Shop tab now covers Argos, Currys and AO alongside the supermarkets. When I checked on 17 September 2026, it paid 3% at Argos, 2% at Currys and 1.9% at AO. I had Supercharge and Boost switched off, so those are the base rates rather than a boosted headline. However, a Sprive reward is not cash. It goes to your mortgage as an overpayment, so a reader without a mortgage gets nothing from it at all. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. If you do have one, the code is on my Sprive referral page.

The credit card protection you give up

Sprive and JamDoughnut both work by buying a gift card, and that breaks a protection most people do not know they have. Pay for something over £100 on a credit card and your card company becomes equally responsible if the seller goes bust or the goods never turn up. That rule is Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Buy a gift card with the card, then buy the AirPods with the gift card, and the card paid for the gift card rather than the earbuds. The chain breaks. A debit card chargeback weakens the same way.

That bites hardest on exactly the purchases worth making. Section 75 only applies above £100 anyway, so an £80 pair of AirPods 2 was never covered. A £150 AirPods Pro 3 and a £185 AirPods Max both sit above the line. So the trade is real money against real cover. Take it only if you feel confident you will keep the thing.

Timing / Black Friday

If you can wait nine weeks, wait

Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November.

US Thanksgiving lands on Thursday 26 November 2026, so Black Friday is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. That is arithmetic rather than a prediction, and UK retailers normally run promotions in the days either side of both.

Refurbished AirPods UK prices move with the sales like everything else. Nobody has announced an AirPods deal, though, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. AirPods do discount in most years, and 27 November is about nine weeks away. If the pair you want is a want rather than a need, waiting is the sensible move.

One term catches anyone planning to refer a friend over the sales. Back Market holds referral store credit on any order placed between the Monday before Black Friday and 31 December. It releases that credit when the return period closes on 1 February. Credit earned in November lands in February.

Buying second-hand AirPods, and the one check to do before you pay

Private sales go below every price above, and the good fakes will pass a photograph.

eBay private listings, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree all undercut every refurbished AirPods UK seller I checked. What you give up is the whole of the protection. No warranty, no tested battery, and from a private seller no right to send something back because you do not like it.

Counterfeits are the real risk, not scuffs. The good clones copy the packaging, the serial sticker and the pop-up pairing animation an iPhone shows when you open the case. A photograph tells you almost nothing.

The serial number is the check that matters. Every genuine pair carries one, and Apple's coverage checker reads it in about ten seconds. A serial Apple does not recognise is a definite no. A serial it does recognise is not a guarantee, because clones do copy real numbers, but it removes the laziest fakes. A seller who will not hand over the serial is one to walk away from.

The payment method is the other protection. A credit card gives you Section 75 protection above £100. A bank transfer to a stranger gives you nothing at all.

CeX sells a working 2019 pair for £58 with five years of cover behind it. A private sale has to come in a long way under that before the risk is worth taking. Where the model you want is one CeX and the outlets do not stock, the sums change.

Frequently asked questions

Are refurbished AirPods worth it in the UK?

On three models, yes. An AirPods Pro 3 from CeX at £150 saves £50 against the cheapest new price. An AirPods Max from CeX at £185 buys headphones Apple no longer sells new, with five years of cover. An AirPods 4 with noise cancelling from CeX at £90 saves £39 against Argos. On everything else the gap has closed to £25 or less, and at that distance a full Apple warranty and an unused battery beat the saving. Those prices are from 22 September 2026.

How long is the warranty on refurbished AirPods?

Twelve months almost everywhere, and five years at CeX. Amazon Renewed gives a one-year guarantee. Back Market gives a 12-month warranty from the individual seller. Currys gives a 12-month technical guarantee on outlet stock. Apple Certified Refurbished gives the standard one-year limited warranty. CeX gives five years free on everything it sells, minus consumables. The exclusions differ, though. Back Market's certificate names gradual battery degradation as normal wear and tear, so a fading battery never becomes a claim.

Does refurbished mean used?

Yes, with testing in between. Someone owned the pair before you. A refurbisher then inspects it, cleans it, resets it to factory settings and grades its cosmetic condition. Back Market promises a minimum of 80% battery health across its marketplace. Amazon describes its Renewed stock as professionally inspected and tested. Only Apple fits a new battery and a new outer shell.

Can you tell refurbished AirPods from new ones?

Usually not by looking, at the top grades. The giveaways are elsewhere: no white Apple box, and a generic charging cable instead of an Apple one. The case often shows more wear than the buds, because it lives in a pocket. Battery life is the real difference and it is invisible until you use them.

Is Back Market cheaper than Amazon Renewed for AirPods?

No. On 22 September Amazon came in cheaper on every shared model, by £2 on AirPods 3, £11.01 on AirPods 4 with noise cancelling and £2 on AirPods Max. Neither is the cheapest overall, though. CeX undercut Back Market on the AirPods Pro 2 by £38 and on the AirPods Max by £145, and undercut Amazon on the AirPods Pro 3 by £29. Back Market's remaining advantage is range.

Because nothing is in stock. Four models sit in the filter. Yet each returned "The product you're looking for is currently unavailable" on 17, 18 and 22 September. Apple publishes no restock schedule and no waiting list, so the only option is to keep checking the page.
