What the KINDNESS MATTERS notebook is

It is a paperback notebook with a fine dot grid printed on every page. There are no lines, headers or dates, so each page works for whatever you need that day. That might be a rough thumbnail, a page of logo ideas or a list of jobs.

The dots are light enough to sit in the background. They still give you a guide for straight lines, even margins and boxes that come out the same size.

The cover is white and matte, with KINDNESS MATTERS set in heavy black capitals across the top half.

Where the cover comes from

The cover is based on KINDNESS MATTERS, a sculpture I made in 2024. It is a closed book in matt black, with the title in gold leaf and my name along the bottom. It measures 25 x 20 x 5cm (9.8 x 7.9 x 2in) and is made from matt emulsion, acrylic, gold leaf and 3D-printed plastic (PLA) on board. You can see it on my art site, where the original is for sale at £1,250.

The notebook reverses the sculpture's colours. The sculpture is a black book with gold lettering. The notebook is a white book with black lettering, and its pages are there to be filled.

It sits alongside my other work on CoolCuration, such as the Soapy Drama print, a signed open edition at £35.

Size, pages and paper

The notebook is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, which is 14 x 21.6cm. That is a common American notebook size, close to A5 but about 8mm narrower and 6mm taller. So it fits in most bags and sits on a desk without taking over.

Inside are 150 pages of white paper with the dot grid on every page. The book is 9mm thick and weighs 249g, about the same as a paperback novel.

The paper weight is not published on the listing. If you use fountain pens or heavy markers, try them on the last page first to see how much shows through.

It is a paperback with a glued spine rather than a sewn binding. As a result it will not lie completely flat on a desk the way a sewn notebook does.

What designers use a dot grid notebook for

A dot grid notebook for designers gives you the guides of graph paper with far less ink on the page. It works especially well for five jobs:

• Wireframes and app screens. The grid keeps buttons, cards and margins in line, so a sketch is easier to rebuild in Figma or Penpot afterwards.
• Logo and lettering practice. The dots give you a baseline and a cap height to work to, then fade into the background.
• Layout thumbnails. You can draw a run of small boxes the same size and try a different composition in each.
• Diagrams and user flows. Arrows and boxes snap to the dots, so a flow stays readable when you photograph it for a colleague.
• Everyday notes. Lists, meeting notes and to-dos work on dots as well as on lines.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits graphic designers, user experience (UX) and interface (UI) designers, illustrators and art students. It also suits anyone who thinks better with a pen than a keyboard. At under £10 it works as a stocking filler, a Secret Santa present or a welcome present for a new colleague.

If you want a notebook that lies flat, choose something else. The Mark+Fold Glow notebook has a sewn binding that opens flat from the first page, at £32. If you prefer ruled lines, the Raeburn A5 NASA notebook is the alternative.

Also, 5.5 x 8.5 inches is not A5, so a cover or folio made exactly for A5 notebooks will not fit it.
