Anaja Hvastija Gaia is the Slovenian artist who paints calm, glowing scenes of pale female figures, flowers and landscapes in thin layers of oil. Here you will find our take on her work, where Anaja Hvastija Gaia has shown, how to buy her paintings, and her two small panels in this year’s War Child auction.
Our take on Anaja Hvastija Gaia
Hvastija Gaia paints soft, smooth female figures folded into hills, water and sky. She builds each picture in very thin layers, so the colour seems to glow from inside the canvas. Reviewing her solo booth at the 2024 Spring/Break Art Show in Los Angeles, Hyperallergic noted she used “the thinnest application of oil paint I’ve seen in a minute”.
Her two War Child lots, both oil on plywood, show that method at small scale. Beneath the Moon is all blues: a large lily floats over rolling, cloud-like hills, with a dark band of sea below. At the Edge of an Unfinished Summer sets a glowing yellow star-shaped flower in a deep navy sky. Below it, two cream curtain-like forms open onto a pale blue tiled floor that runs into the distance.
She has built an international CV quickly, with solo shows in Los Angeles, New York and Miami between 2023 and 2024. As far as I can find, she has no UK gallery, which makes these two panels one of the few chances to see her work in London.
