Gerhard Richter is the German painter of blurred photo paintings, colour charts and squeegee abstracts. Here you will find our take on his work, his recent retrospectives and the Richter prints you can order from Tate.

Our take on Gerhard Richter

Richter was born in Dresden on 9 February 1932. He moved to West Germany in 1961, where he met artists such as Sigmar Polke and Joseph Beuys in the Rhineland, according to Kunstpalast Düsseldorf.

His range is wide: soft-focus paintings made from photographs, grids of colour, and abstract canvases scraped with a squeegee. He received the Praemium Imperiale in 1997.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris gave him a retrospective of about 270 works from October 2025 to March 2026, co-curated by Nicholas Serota and Dieter Schwarz, according to The Art Newspaper.
