Grace Lee is the London artist, trained at Goldsmiths and the Slade, whose deadpan paintings of objects, animals and borrowed images are both funny and quietly sad. Here you will find our take on their work, where to see Grace Lee now, how to buy a painting, and their two small pieces in this year’s War Child auction.
Our take on Grace Lee
Lee lifts images from books, manuals, film posters and old photographs, then strips them back to line, shape and tone. The results look simple, but they rarely settle on one meaning. Lee sums up the tone neatly: “Everything is a joke, and everything is completely sincere,” as quoted by Huxley-Parlour. In their own essay for the gallery, Lee writes that “our myths and memes act as outfits”.
There are two Grace Lee pieces in the War Child sale, both oil and coloured pencil. Fender Bender shows a blue car with its bonnet crumpled, outlined in peachy pencil, with cartoon starbursts marking the impact. It is a car crash drawn like a comic strip. Foxgloves is softer: tall pink and purple flower spikes rise over a tangle of green and ochre stems.
The pair shows both sides of Lee’s work, the joke and the sincere. They have had two solo shows at Huxley-Parlour in Mayfair, plus one at Solito in Naples, and their paintings usually sell on enquiry. A small, signed panel through a charity auction is a more approachable way in.
