Richard Wentworth is the London sculptor and photographer who turns everyday objects, and the makeshift fixes people leave on the street, into art. Here you will find our take on his work, his current show in Banbury, and two editions you can buy from £350.

Our take on Richard Wentworth

Wentworth has been one of the main figures in British sculpture since the late 1970s, according to Lisson Gallery. He combines found and industrial objects so they lose their usual job: a chair, a bucket, a book, put to work in a new arrangement.

His camera does the same thing on the street. Since 1974 his photo series Making Do and Getting By has collected wedged doors, propped windows and other improvised fixes. “I only photograph ‘things’, and I only photograph what I encounter. I don’t go hunting,” he says in the notes to his Hepworth Wakefield edition.

Two public galleries sell signed editions, which is the easiest way to own his work.
