Google Nest Learning Thermostat

We loved the Google Nest Learning Thermostat, the round steel dial that learned your routine and set the heating for you. It is no longer sold new in the UK. Google has stopped making Nest thermostats for Europe, and its UK store only offers a "Get notified" button for the Nest Learning Thermostat. If you need a smart thermostat now, the Netatmo Smart Thermostat is the closest replacement we cover.
What happened to the Nest Learning Thermostat
In April 2025 Google said it would stop selling new Nest thermostats in Europe, including the UK. It gave the reason that European heating systems vary too much to build for, as TechRadar reported at the time. The newest model, the fourth generation, never launched here.
The third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat stayed on sale until stock ran out. When I checked on 19 October 2026, the Google Store UK still listed it at £219, but with a "Get notified" button instead of a way to buy. On Amazon UK, only third-party sellers list it.
If you already own one
A third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat or a Nest Thermostat E keeps working, and you can still control it from your phone.
The first and second generations, from 2011 and 2012, lost app control and software updates on 25 October 2025. They still heat the house on the schedule stored on the device, and you can change the temperature on the dial. You just cannot change anything from your phone or use Home and Away.

What to check before you replace it
Look at how your old Nest was wired. A third-generation Nest in the UK usually ran through a Heat Link box next to the boiler, and a new thermostat will need its own relay or receiver in that spot.
Check whether your boiler supports OpenTherm. If it does, a thermostat that turns the flame up and down, rather than just on and off, can make better use of it. Check the maker's compatibility guidance before you buy; Netatmo, for example, runs an online checker at check.netatmo.com.
Moving the wiring at the boiler means working with mains electrics. If you are not comfortable with that, book a heating engineer.
