If you live with more than one cat, you already know the villain of this story. In our house, we have The Grazer and The Food Thief. The Grazer is a gentle soul who nibbles throughout the day. The Food Thief is a vacuum in a fur suit who inhales his own food in seconds, then marches over to hers like he's collecting rent.

This SureFeed feeder review starts at the moment I realised I was spending half my life escorting bowls behind closed doors and emotionally counselling a skinny, bullied cat who just wanted her calories in peace. I needed a way to stop the theft without turning our home into an escape room. So we bought the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder, and after more than six months of daily use, here is exactly how it went.

What is the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder?

The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder is made by Sure Petcare, a Cambridge-based company now part of Merck Animal Health. In short, it is a sealed food bowl that only opens when the correct cat approaches. It reads your cat's implanted microchip (or an included RFID collar tag) and lifts the lid for that animal alone. When the cat walks away, the lid closes and locks the food inside.

It is not an automatic timed feeder. Think of it as access control, not scheduling. If you want portions dispensed on a timer, this is not the product for you. However, if your main problem is one cat nicking another cat's dinner, this is exactly what you need.

First impressions

When the box arrived, my first thought was that Apple had quietly started making cat bowls. It is clean, white, curved and softly futuristic. Not quite chic enough for the living room mantelpiece, but far nicer than most pet gadgets.

Inside the box you get the feeder body, a standard plastic bowl, a split bowl (handy if your cat likes wet and dry served separately), a silicone mat, the sealed lid, an RFID collar tag and a quick-start guide. Batteries are not included, which caught me off guard. You will need four C-cell batteries, so grab some before setup day.

Build quality feels solid for a plastic product. After more than six months, ours still looks essentially new. That says something, because the Food Thief is not gentle with anything.

The experience: how the SureFeed works day to day

Microchip and RFID recognition

Programming is genuinely simple. You hold the learn button, bring your cat close, and the feeder stores their microchip number. It can hold up to 32 IDs, so even the most ambitious cat household is covered. If your cat is not microchipped, the included RFID collar tag does the same job. Both methods work reliably in our experience, although the microchip route is more convenient because there is nothing to lose or replace.

The sealed lid

This is one of the biggest selling points. When the cat walks away, the lid closes onto a neoprene seal that keeps wet food noticeably fresher for longer. Flies stay out, smells stay in, and the bowl no longer goes crusty after an hour. We tested it with both wet food and raw, and the difference compared to an open bowl is significant. On a warm day, that seal earns its keep several times over.

Training mode

Our Grazer is suspicious of anything new. She once panicked at a cardboard box. So introducing a motorised lid felt risky. Thankfully, the training mode gradually increases how far the lid moves each day. By day five or six, she was strutting up with full confidence. Meanwhile, the Food Thief quickly learned that no amount of side-swiping, headbutting or patient staring would crack the system. The look of betrayal on his face was genuinely exceptional.

Noise and speed

The lid makes a soft mechanical click when it opens and closes. It is not silent, but it is not startling either. Nervous cats may need the training mode for a few extra days, but most animals adjust fast. You can also set three different closing speeds depending on how quickly your cat tends to wander off mid-meal.

Standard vs Connect: which version should you buy?

Sure Petcare sell two versions. We bought the Standard model, which has no Wi-Fi and no app. It simply controls access. The Connect model pairs with a hub and tracks feeding habits through the Sure Petcare app.

The Connect is worth the extra if your cat has health issues and you want precise intake data, or if multiple people in the household share feeding duties. On the other hand, if your only goal is stopping food theft, the Standard does everything you need without adding another hub to your Wi-Fi network. We have been perfectly happy with the simpler option.

Value for money

There is no way around it: the SureFeed is expensive compared to a normal cat bowl. However, it is one of the only products that genuinely solves the multi-cat food-theft problem without physically separating your animals into different rooms. When you factor in wasted food, vet bills from overeating or undereating, and the daily hassle of policing mealtimes, the cost starts to make more sense.

Battery life is solid too. We got just over four months from a set of C-cells with twice-daily use, and Sure Petcare quote up to six months. A low-battery indicator flashes when the power is running down, so you are never caught off guard.

Optional upgrade: stainless steel bowls

The included plastic bowls work fine initially, but over time they pick up scratches that harbour bacteria. Many vets recommend stainless steel or ceramic because scratched plastic is linked to feline chin acne. Sure Petcare sell official stainless steel inserts that drop straight in. They are easier to clean, do not absorb smells, and fit snugly without rattling. There are also compatible third-party options if you want to shop around, but check sizing before you buy.

What we loved: Completely stops food theft. Sealed lid keeps wet food fresh for hours. Training mode is thoughtful and effective. Battery life is generous. Build quality holds up well over months of use. Compatible with all standard UK microchips.

What could be better: Price is steep compared to standard bowls. No portion control or scheduling. Requires C-cell batteries, which are less common than AA or AAA. The included plastic bowls should ideally be stainless steel from the start. Footprint is bigger than a normal bowl, so measure your space.

This feeder is ideal if you need to protect one cat's food from another, manage weight or prescription diets in a multi-cat home, or simply keep wet food fresher while you are out. The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder does exactly what it promises. It stopped our Food Thief dead in his tracks from day one, and the sealed lid turned out to be an unexpected bonus that we now could not live without. After more than six months, it still works flawlessly and still looks good.

Overall, a solid 4/5 Stone cold. The SureFeed earned that score by completely solving the food-theft problem, keeping wet food genuinely fresh, and holding up beautifully after months of daily abuse. It did not quite hit Ice cold because the price is hard to ignore, the included bowls should really be stainless steel out of the box, and the lack of any portion control or scheduling means it only solves one problem, albeit brilliantly. For multi-cat households, though, it is one of the smartest purchases you can make.
