What the Purobot Max 3 does
It is a rotating-drum litter tray. Your cat goes in, walks out, and a few minutes later the drum turns, sifts the clumps and drops them into a sealed bin underneath. You empty the bin instead of scooping the tray. PETKIT rates it at up to 15 days between empties, though that figure is for a single cat and drops sharply with two or three.
PETKIT calls it the third generation of its automated litter box. The headline change is a wider, lower entry aimed at larger cats and short-legged breeds, along with a patented 360 degree ShieldBase leak guard for cats that urinate high up the wall.

The camera question, answered honestly
The Purobot Max 3 is the newest tray in PETKIT’s range and it has no AI camera. Multi-cat recognition is done by weight alone. “Third generation” reads as “most advanced”, and on this point it is not.
If camera-based monitoring is what you are after, the Purobot Max Pro 2 is the cheapest model that has one. On PETKIT’s own site that is a £100 step up. On Amazon it is closer to £70, which makes the Max 3 a harder sell than the RRPs suggest.

What else you need to budget for
The tray is the start of the spending, not the end of it. Three things are ongoing and one is roughly annual.
- Litter, monthly. It needs a fast-clumping litter within PETKIT’s granule size limits. We use KatKin Scoop Planet, a plant-based pea and millet litter that suits the sifting drum well.
- Liners, ongoing. PETKIT sells no biodegradable liner for the waste bin. Toraphene compostable caddy liners fit it properly and are what we use.
- N50 2.0 odour cartridges, roughly monthly. About £23.79. The sealed design works far better with one fitted.
- Cylinder mat, roughly annual. £39.99, and the current part fits the PuraMax 2, the Purobot Max 3 and the Max Pro models.
Who it suits
It suits multi-cat households where daily scooping has become the worst job in the house, and people who are out for long stretches. The per-cat weight logging is a quiet bonus: a slow change in body weight is one of the earliest signs a cat is unwell, and having a passive record makes the annual vet visit more useful.
It suits you less if you want camera monitoring, if you have a kitten or a very nervous cat, or if you use crystal or non-clumping litter, which the drum is not designed for.
Worth knowing that International Cat Care advises one tray per cat plus a spare. An automatic tray replaces the scooping, not the arithmetic, though a tray that is always clean does take some of the pressure off.

Is it safe for cats?
It has 12 anti-pinch sensors that stop the drum if weight or movement is detected. No automatic tray is risk-free and PETKIT does not recommend them for very small kittens, so supervise the first few weeks.
