Black NIGO x Nike beanie with the Nike swoosh and NIGO in white on the turn-up.

NIGO x Nike Obsidian Black Beanie

Last updated: 15 September 2026

The NIGO Nike beanie is a black wool hat made with Nike for the Design Museum's NIGO show. The swoosh is redrawn with NIGO set across it in white. Only the Design Museum Shop sells it. The whole NIGO range goes when the exhibition closes on 4 October 2026. It costs £40, plus £5 UK postage. Collect it at the museum and postage is nothing. Price and stock come from the shop's own product page, checked on 9 September 2026.

What the NIGO Nike beanie is

It is a plain black cuffed beanie with one graphic on the turn-up. The Nike swoosh runs underneath the word NIGO, both embroidered in off-white. Nothing else appears on the hat. Nike is the listed vendor, so this is a Nike beanie carrying a NIGO graphic. The museum did not design it.

The shop calls the colour Obsidian. In Nike's palette that is a very dark navy rather than a true black, and in daylight you can see the blue in it. The listing describes the hat as woollen. It publishes no fibre percentage, no care code and no size chart, and only one size is on sale. Those are gaps in the listing rather than details we can fill in.

NIGO, and why the Design Museum is selling a Nike hat

NIGO founded A Bathing Ape in 1993. He then spent three decades moving between streetwear, music and fashion, and today he is artistic director at Kenzo. The Design Museum's own description calls him one of the first designers to bridge streetwear and luxury fashion. That is roughly why a museum better known for chairs and posters has a Nike collaboration in its shop.

Three parties made this hat and each did one job. The museum commissioned the range to sit alongside the show. Nike manufactured the hat. NIGO drew the front.

The exhibition, and the date that decides everything

NIGO: From Japan with Love runs at the Design Museum from 1 May to 4 October 2026. It is the first museum retrospective of his work outside Japan. Over 700 objects are in it, among them a recreation of his teenage bedroom, ceramics he threw himself and a life-size glass tea house built for the show.

Adult tickets start at £15.29, children at £7.65 and students and concessions at £11.47, while members go free. One thing to plan around: the museum is fully closed to the public on 18 September 2026.

The closing date sets the deadline for the hat, not just for the show. A museum shop does not restock a range tied to a temporary exhibition once it ends. This one already sold out once in early September before coming back. So buy it while the show is on, or accept that you are relying on resale.

Price, postage and the members' discount

The beanie is £40 and that is the standing price, not a reduction. UK postage starts at £5 for orders under 2kg, by Royal Mail signed for. Delivery takes 2 to 4 working days. Free UK delivery starts at £60. So a beanie on its own lands at £45, which is £20 short of the free line.

Two ways round that. Design Museum members take 10% off in the shop, which brings the hat to £36. If you were going to the show anyway, the membership sum is worth doing. Otherwise click and collect from the shop in the museum's atrium costs nothing, and you are going to the building regardless.

Who it suits. Anyone who wants a piece of the NIGO show that is not a catalogue. Also anyone who already wears plain black beanies and would rather the logo on theirs came from somewhere. You are paying a museum-shop premium over an ordinary Nike beanie for a graphic that will not be made again. That is either the appeal or the objection, depending on how you feel about exhibition merchandise.

NIGO Nike beanie FAQs

Can you buy the NIGO x Nike beanie anywhere else?

No. The Design Museum Shop commissioned the range for the exhibition and it is the only retailer. Nike does not list it, and neither does Kenzo.

What happens to the range when the exhibition closes?

It goes. The shop produces these ranges in a fixed run and stops carrying them once the show ends on 4 October 2026. Anything left usually sells through in the closing weeks.

Is £40 a sale price?

No. The shop's own listing shows £40 as the regular price, with no reduction behind it. Checked on 9 September 2026.

What size is it?

One size, and the shop publishes no measurements. It is a standard cuffed beanie shape, so it fits the way any Nike cuffed beanie fits.

Does the Design Museum make the hat?

No. Nike is the listed vendor and manufacturer. The museum commissioned the collaboration and sells it, and NIGO designed the front graphic.

Is there a discount?

Members get 10% off, which takes it to £36. The shop also runs a 10% first-order code for newsletter sign-ups.
