What the Fred's Garden candle is

The founder, Olly, made this candle for his grandads, Dennis, Victor and John, and his great-grandad Fred, who all loved their gardens. The brief asked for the mix of a garden rather than one flower: grass, earth, wild hanging baskets, and tomatoes and grapes in the greenhouse.

He also asked for it to smell real, because synthetic flower scents can be harsh. Fred's own garden gives the candle its name.

Where the money goes

Good Candles donates 10% of the selling price of each Fred's Garden candle, at least £3, to CALM. The charity leads a movement against suicide and runs a helpline for anyone who is struggling. Olly chose CALM after losing friends to suicide.

Good Candles gives part of every sale to good causes across its range, and it posts its monthly donations in its Instagram story highlights.

It also works as a present for a grandparent or anyone who grew up around a vegetable patch. For more ideas, see our gifts that give back guide.

The limits

Good Candles does not publish a burn time or the candle's weight, so it is hard to compare it on value with bigger brands.

At £35, it costs more than most supermarket candles, though part of the price goes to CALM.

Finally, if you want something smoky rather than green, the same maker's Forest Fire candle smells of campfires and whisky.

Where to buy it in the UK

Good Candles sells Fred's Garden direct from its own shop, and the candle is made in Kent.
