A furoshiki is a square of cloth that the Japanese have used to wrap and carry things for centuries, and this one wraps a present that way on the day. It is 90 by 90cm of cotton shantung, printed by Hamamonyo in Japan with a flock of blue birds, so it covers a shoebox or a bottle with room to knot the corners. After Christmas it becomes a tablecloth, a scarf or a bag.

These are from the sixth collection Lazy Oaf has made with Tate, which is built around the art of making. The design is a red and black pencil knitted into each sock, and the yarn is a soft cotton mix with some stretch.

For the friend who matches her nails to the gallery she is going to.
The Design Museum worked with the London beauty brand A Weathered Penny on five nail colours taken from the museum's own palette. Oxide Green, pictured, takes its tone from Holland Park outside the building. The varnish is vegan, cruelty free and made in the UK, and the museum had thirty-four bottles of this shade in stock.
The single bottle. One bottle is a small present on its own at £16. The other four shades are Museum Yellow, Modernist Red, Ink Blue and London Stone, so two or three together make a better parcel. Meanwhile, my self-care gifts collection has more for the same person.

Angela Harding is a British printmaker, and this 1,000-piece puzzle reproduces her Winter Wonderland print of a leaping deer, owls and foxes in a snowy wood. Once finished, the picture is 735 by 510mm, a little smaller than a sheet of A1. The Hepworth Wakefield sells it in its gallery shop and online.

2027 Guide to the Night Sky and Planisphere
For whoever always points at the brightest star and asks if it is a planet.
Royal Museums Greenwich sells this pair together: a month-by-month guide to the planets, stars and constellations visible in 2027, and a planisphere, the rotating star wheel that shows which stars are up at any date and time. Storm Dunlop and Wil Tirion compiled it, and the astronomers of the Royal Observatory Greenwich approved it. It is written for skies over Britain and Ireland.

Studio Arhoj is a Copenhagen ceramics studio, and these cork-backed coasters carry flowers drawn from old Japanese family crests. Each set holds six different flowers, and there are two sets, Flowers of Okinawa and Flowers of Hokkaido. Each is 10cm across, and the set comes boxed, so it is ready to give.
The cleaning. They cannot go in water, only a wipe with a damp cloth, so they are for glasses and mugs rather than for a wet bottle of wine. Meanwhile, my gifts for a new home collection has more for the same person.

Trellick Tower is Ernő Goldfinger's Grade II listed block in North Kensington, opened in 1972. This A4 print draws it in yellow on bright blue, and it comes from Eye for London, a small South London design studio. The Barbican Shop stocks it, printed matte on 250gsm paper.
The frame in the photo. The shop's picture shows it framed, but the £22 print arrives unframed, packed flat on backing card. An A4 frame is a second purchase. The Barbican had six in stock. My gifts for designers collection also has more like this.

It is a stacking game in painted wooden blocks, where each player pulls one out and puts it on top until somebody brings it down. The difference is the colour: the rows run from deep blue down to pale green, so the gradient scrambles as you play. Built up, it stands 26cm tall and 8cm square, so it also fits a shelf between games.

Original Duckhead makes umbrellas with a wooden duck's head for a handle, which is what makes them easy to spot in a stand full of black ones. Matcha is a new soft green colour, added to the range at the end of August. This is the compact version, so it folds down small enough for a bag.

Lapuan Kankurit is a Finnish textile mill, and this hot water bottle has a textured wool cover designed by Akira Minagawa, the Japanese designer behind the label minä perhonen. The pattern, meanwhile, is overlapping lines based on the northern lights. The removable cover is 100% wool, including wool from Finnsheep, and it comes in three colours.
The rubber bottle. The cover lasts for years, but the rubber bottle inside does not. Replace that part regularly, and check any replacement carries the British Standard mark BS 1970. My self-care gifts collection also has more like this.

Flensted is a Danish family firm that has made hanging mobiles for decades. Starry Night 7, by Carina Caia and Ole Flensted, has white stars with cut-out centres floating inside a loop of brass wire tipped with two gold balls. It hangs 35cm tall and 30cm wide, and it turns in the slightest draught.

This is a new edition of Shrigley's well-known pair. He sculpted a new model by hand in clay, which was then cast in white porcelain, and he rewrote the words on each shaker himself. Each one is 6 by 9cm, and they come in a gift box with silver lettering.

Wallace & Sewell are London textile designers known for bold, asymmetric weaves. The Walton scarf mixes red, burgundy and beige stripes with small geometric blocks and ends in a fringe. It is 100% merino lambswool and measures 21 by 175cm.

This cross-body pouch reworks one of the staples of the Ally Capellino + Tate range. It is waxed canvas with a magnetic front flap, a flush pocket on the back and a brown cotton webbing strap that adjusts.

Ginge's lambswool cover is knitted and hand-finished at Donna Wilson's Knit Shop in Dundee. It is an orange-striped cat with a curling tail, 36 by 22cm, with a natural rubber bottle inside. It is part of her autumn and winter 2026 range, with a snail, a tortoise and a ladybird alongside.

A moon 14cm across floats and turns by magnet above a wooden base, lit from inside. Gingko 3D-prints the surface with the craters in place, and the light switches between warm yellow, warm white and cool white. The Design Museum Shop sells it.

For the friend whose tree is colour-coordinated.
These twelve turned-wood decorations were designed at the Bauhaus in 1929 and 1930 and are attributed to the architect Johannes Gabriel. The originals turned up in the estate of a Cologne architect who bought directly from the school, and IC Design reissued them for the Bauhaus centenary. They are turned in maple in Germany's Black Forest, largely by hand, and they come boxed.
The price per bauble. £150 for twelve works out at £12.50 a decoration, far more than a high-street bauble. The Barbican had ten sets in stock. Meanwhile, my gifts for designers collection has more for the same person.

Garmin announced the CIRQA on 21 July 2026 as a screenless band that tracks heart rate, sleep, stress and more than 80 activities, with no subscription to pay. Everything shows up in the Garmin Connect app instead of on the wrist. The battery lasts up to 10 days.
The missing screen. With no display, you only see the data afterwards in the app, not during a run. Early on it also asks you to confirm the activities it detects. My gifts for techies collection also has more like this.

Richard Sapper's 9090 was the first coffee maker Alessi ever made, the first of its Compasso d'Oro design awards and the first Alessi object shown at MoMA in New York. It is a stovetop pot in polished steel with a wide base to spread the heat and a lever that opens the top with one hand. The magnetic steel base works on induction hobs.

Massimo and Lella Vignelli designed the New York subway signage and the American Airlines identity, and this watch for the Swiss maker Pierre Junod is theirs. A coloured ring frames the face and swaps out, and Junod makes it in sixteen colours. The case is 38mm under sapphire glass, on a black calf leather strap, and Junod assembles it in Bienne.
The movement. It runs on a quartz movement rather than a mechanical one, which keeps it accurate but will disappoint a watch collector. Meanwhile, my gifts for life collection has more for the same person.

Royal Mail last posting dates for Christmas 2026
Royal Mail had not published its last posting dates for Christmas 2026 when I checked on 21 September 2026. Its Christmas last posting dates page still showed last year's. It usually publishes the new dates in the autumn, and I will add them here the week they appear.
The 14-day cooling-off period for online orders
Buy something online, by phone or by mail order and you get 14 days to change your mind. According to Citizens Advice, that period starts the day after the order arrives. So a present delivered on 5 November can be sent back until 19 November, and after that you are relying on the shop's own policy. Personalised and made-to-order items do not get a cooling-off period at all.
If you buy in November, check whether the shop extends its returns window over Christmas before you pay. A longer window is the shop's policy rather than your right, and the terms vary from shop to shop.
Gift receipts and shop returns
In a shop, you have no legal right to return something that is not faulty just because the recipient does not like it. A gift receipt only works because the shop has chosen to accept one, so its policy decides whether the recipient gets a refund, an exchange or a credit note. Faulty goods are different, because the law gives the buyer the right to a repair, replacement or refund, as Citizens Advice sets out. Ask for a gift receipt at the till, and keep your own receipt as well.

For anything from a small shop or an artist, start in October or early November. Only if the shop agrees. There is no legal right to return a present that is not faulty, so a gift receipt or the shop's own Christmas returns policy is what decides it. Faulty goods are a different case, and the buyer can still ask for a repair, replacement or refund.
