Two Bookniture folding paper stools outside, one used as a side table with a mug, the other as a seat

Bookniture folding stool

Last updated: 19 October 2026

Bookniture is a stool made from folded kraft paper that closes up flat like a hardback book. It looks like it is no longer on sale. The Bookniture website now shows only a "Site Under Construction" page, and I struggled to find it in any UK shop. These were some of the best products we have ever owned, though, and they still turn up on eBay, new and used.

What Bookniture is

Bookniture was designed by Mike Mak in Hong Kong and funded on Kickstarter in 2015. The idea is furniture that lives on a bookshelf until you need it.

Closed, it looks like a large book. Open it and fan the pages round in a circle, and the paper locks into a honeycomb that you can sit on. According to Idealog, it opens to 14 times its closed size and holds more than 100 times its own weight.

Why we rate it

The appeal is easy to explain: a spare seat or side table that goes back on the bookshelf when you are done with it. In a small flat, that means no floor space lost for the rest of the week.

It also looks good open. The folded paper gives it a ribbed, sculptural shape, which is why it reads as a design object rather than a camping stool.

Buying one on eBay

When I looked, there were a handful of Bookniture listings on eBay UK, both new and pre-owned, in black and other colours. Check these points before you bid:

  • Is the seat pad included? Some listings are the book only, without the round top.
  • Condition of the pages: creased or torn paper weakens the honeycomb.
  • Delivery: some listings ship from abroad, with high postage on top.

The limits

It is paper. Keep it away from spilt drinks, rain and damp floors, and do not leave it outside.

It is also a stool, not a chair. There is no back, and a slightly soft feel under you takes some getting used to.

Finally, buying second-hand means no warranty and no maker to contact if something goes wrong.

If you are furnishing a small place from scratch, our gifts for a new home guide has more ideas that are still on sale.

FAQs

Is Bookniture still sold?

It does not look like it. The brand's website showed only a holding page when I checked on 19 October 2026, and I could not find it in UK shops.

Where can I buy Bookniture in the UK?

eBay UK is the most likely place. Listings come and go, so check back now and then.

How much did Bookniture cost?

When we first featured it, the Bookniture stool was £84.

What is Bookniture made of?

Kraft paper folded into a honeycomb, which is how it carries an adult's weight.

Can Bookniture get wet?

No. Treat it like a book and keep it dry.
