Action camerasWinter 2026
Seven action cameras for cold, wet and dark days, and what each one costs in its first year

These are the best action cameras UK shops sell right now for autumn and winter use: cycling commutes in the dark, ski trips, muddy dog walks and Christmas presents. I picked seven, from the ยฃ199.99 GoPro HERO to the ยฃ519 Insta360 X5, and set each one against the same winter checks.

Those checks are the coldest temperature the maker rates it for, how deep it goes in water without a case, and how long the battery lasts. Then I added up what each camera really costs once you buy the memory card and spare battery it needs. Two of the cameras swap places once you do. If you are buying one as a present, my Christmas gift guide has ideas for everyone else on the list.

Section 01 / How I picked

How I chose the best action cameras for winter

Every camera here is current, sold new in the UK and rated by its maker for real cold.

Most action camera guides are written for summer holidays. However, a camera bought now will spend its first months on a handlebar at 7am in November, on a ski helmet in February, or in a coat pocket on a wet walk. So I judged each one on four things that matter in those conditions.

First, I looked at the lowest operating temperature on each maker's spec sheet. Second, I checked how deep each one can go underwater without a separate case, because rain and snow get everywhere. Third, I compared the maker's battery figure, and whether you can swap the battery at all. Finally, I worked out the real price of the best action cameras UK buyers can get, once a memory card and a spare battery are added.

I left out the DJI Osmo Action 4, which DJI no longer sells on its UK store, and the DJI Osmo Nano, because I could not find its full specification on DJI's site. I also left out GoPro's new MISSION 1 cameras, which GoPro sells as cinema cameras rather than action cameras. I checked every price on 27 October 2026.

Section 02 / Best all-rounders

Best all-rounders: one camera for everything

These three do most jobs well, from a bike commute to a ski run to a birthday party.

01For the person who wants one camera for every season

DJI Osmo Action 6

The Osmo Action 6 has the biggest sensor of the seven, at 1/1.1 inch, and a lens that can open to f/2.0. In practice, both let in more light, which helps on short, grey winter days and on a commute after dark. DJI rates it to work from -20ยฐC to 45ยฐC, and it is waterproof to 20m without a case.

It also has 64GB of storage built in, with 50GB free to use, so it works out of the box without a memory card. Battery life is up to 240 minutes in DJI's own test, and the Standard Combo includes a quick-release mount and a curved adhesive base.

The catch is 8K. It records 8K at up to 30 frames a second, but only in 16:9, with fewer stabilisation and colour options. On top of that, DJI says editing 8K in its Mimo app only works on an iPhone 15 Pro or later for now.

GoPro HERO13 Black action camera with front screen and lens
02For the person who already owns GoPro mounts

GoPro HERO13 Black

The HERO13 Black has GoPro's folding two-prong mounting fingers and a 1/4-20 tripod thread built into the body. Plenty of third-party bike, helmet and chest mounts use that same two-prong fitting, so it clips on without an adapter. It records 5.3K at 60 frames a second and 4K at 120, and the battery comes out, so you can carry a spare.

On Amazon it is ยฃ299, which is ยฃ100 less than GoPro's own UK store charges. That Amazon listing is sold by Nexa Sales rather than by Amazon or GoPro, so check the seller before you buy.

However, it is the least winter-ready of the three all-rounders. GoPro rates it from -10ยฐC to 40ยฐC, against -20ยฐC for the DJI and Insta360 cameras here, and it is waterproof to 10m rather than 20m. It also has no storage built in, so you need a microSD card from day one.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 action camera with its flip-up screen raised
03For the person who films themselves

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

The Ace Pro 2 has a 2.5-inch screen that flips up, so you can see yourself while you film. That makes it the easiest of the three for vlogging, talking to camera on a hike or framing a shot of the family. It records 8K at 30 frames a second and 4K at 120, and Insta360 rates it from -20ยฐC to 45ยฐC.

It is waterproof to 12m without a case, and Insta360 quotes up to 180 minutes of recording from its 1,800mAh battery. The standard pack includes a windshield, a mic cap and a mount.

Its weak points are weight and storage. At 184g it is the heaviest camera here, which you notice on a helmet. Also, it has no built-in storage, so a memory card is a must.

Section 03 / Best for 360 and editing later

Best 360 camera: film everything, choose the angle afterwards

A 360 camera records every direction at once, so you pick the shot on your phone later.

Insta360 X5 360 camera shown from the front and the back
Insta360 X5, front and back.
04For the skier who cannot point a camera and ski at once

Insta360 X5

The X5 has a lens on each side and records 360-degree video at 8K and 30 frames a second. Because it captures everything, you never miss the moment by pointing it the wrong way. When the X5 sits on a selfie stick, the stick disappears from the finished shot, which is how those third-person ski and bike clips are made.

Insta360 rates it from -20ยฐC to 40ยฐC and waterproof to 15m without a case. It quotes up to 208 minutes of recording from a 2,400mAh battery. The two lenses can also be replaced if you scratch one, rather than sending the whole camera off for repair.

The downside is the extra work, as well as the price. Every clip has to be reframed in the Insta360 app or on a computer before it becomes a normal video. If you want to film and share straight away, one of the all-rounders suits you better. The newer Insta360 X6 is also out, but its cheapest bundle on Amazon is ยฃ663, which is ยฃ144 more.

Section 04 / Smallest and lightest

Smallest action camera: the one you forget you are wearing

A tiny camera clips to a jacket or a dog harness and stays out of the way.

Insta360 GO Ultra thumb-sized camera docked in its flip-screen Action Pod
05For the dog walker

Insta360 GO Ultra

On its own, the GO Ultra camera weighs 52.9g, about the same as a hen's egg. It is 46mm square, which is small enough to wear on a jacket or a dog's harness. Then it docks into the Action Pod, which adds a flip-up screen and a bigger battery.

It records 4K at 60 frames a second, and the camera on its own is waterproof to 10m. Insta360 quotes 70 minutes of recording from the camera alone, or 200 minutes with the Action Pod topping it up. It also takes a removable microSD card, so you can swap cards rather than wait for transfers.

Seventy minutes is the problem on a long walk, and the battery cannot be swapped. Insta360 also does not publish an operating temperature for it, so I cannot tell you how it copes on a frosty morning. At ยฃ389 it costs ยฃ100 more than the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, a full-size camera.

Section 05 / Best on a budget

Best budget action cameras

One cheaper camera that keeps the winter ratings, and one that is mainly for summer.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro action camera with front and rear screens
06For the person who wants winter ratings for less

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

The Action 5 Pro is the Action 6's predecessor, and DJI still sells it. It keeps the same winter numbers: -20ยฐC to 45ยฐC, waterproof to 20m without a case, and up to 240 minutes of battery. It also has 64GB of built-in storage, with 47GB free to use.

It records 4K at up to 120 frames a second, and weighs 146g. For a commuter or a first-time skier, that covers almost everything the Action 6 does.

Its sensor is smaller, though, at 1/1.3 inch, and the lens is fixed at f/2.8. As a result, it gathers less light than the Action 6 on a dark evening, and there is no 8K. Even so, it is ยฃ70 cheaper.

GoPro HERO compact action camera with ribbed body and lens
07For a child or a first-timer

GoPro HERO

The GoPro HERO is the smallest and cheapest GoPro, at 86g and ยฃ199.99 from GoPro's UK store. It records 4K at 30 frames a second and fits the same GoPro mounts as the HERO13 Black. That makes it a sensible gift for a child or for someone trying action cameras for the first time.

For winter, though, it is the weakest camera here. GoPro rates it from only -10ยฐC to 35ยฐC and waterproof to 5m. Its battery is built in, so you cannot carry a spare, and GoPro does not give a battery life figure for it. On Amazon I could only find it used, so buy it new from GoPro.

Section 06 / The real cost

What the best action cameras in the UK cost in their first year

A memory card and a spare battery change the order more than the shelf prices suggest.

Most of these cameras need extras before they are ready for a cold day. Five need a microSD card, because they have no storage built in. Meanwhile, a spare battery matters more in winter, since DJI and Insta360 test their battery figures at 25ยฐC, not on a cold hillside. So I added a 128GB SanDisk Extreme card and the maker's own spare battery to each one.

Bar chart of action camera first-year cost with memory card and spare battery added, from GoPro HERO at 228.98 pounds to Insta360 X5 at 592.98 pounds
Camera, plus a 128GB card where needed, plus one official spare battery. Tap or click the chart to open it full size.

For example, the Ace Pro 2 is ยฃ30 cheaper than the Action 6 on the shelf. Once you add a ยฃ28.99 card and a ยฃ34.99 battery, though, it ends up ยฃ4.98 more. Similarly, the HERO13 Black starts ยฃ60 cheaper than the Action 6, but the gap shrinks to ยฃ34.53. The DJI cameras gain because their 64GB of built-in storage means you can skip the card.

The spare batteries are the DJI Extreme Battery Plus at ยฃ29, which fits both DJI cameras, and the GoPro Enduro battery at ยฃ25.48. Insta360's are the Ace Pro 2 battery at ยฃ34.99 and the X5 battery at ยฃ44.99. The card is a SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSD at ยฃ28.99.

DJI and Insta360 measure their battery figures at 25ยฐC with power-saving settings on, so treat every figure here as a best case. Specifications come from DJI's Osmo Action 6 specs, GoPro's camera comparison and Insta360's pages for the Ace Pro 2, the X5 and the GO Ultra.

Section 07 / Before you buy

Before you buy an action camera for winter

Five things that catch people out between November and March.

Cold ratings and battery life

Check the operating temperature before anything else. A camera rated to -10ยฐC is fine for a frosty commute in London, but a ski resort can drop well below that. DJI also says its cameras should only be charged between 5ยฐC and 40ยฐC. So charge indoors overnight, and keep the spare battery in an inside pocket, where your body heat keeps it warm.

The GoPro subscription

GoPro sells a subscription called Premium. It adds unlimited cloud backup of GoPro footage, auto-uploads while the camera charges, and a camera replacement service, with fees. In the UK it costs ยฃ27.49 for the first year for new subscribers, then ยฃ54.99 a year, according to GoPro's subscription page. You do not need it to use the camera, so cancel it before it renews if you are not using the cloud storage.

Memory cards

Buy a fast card, because high frame-rate 4K writes a lot of data. DJI lists V30-rated microSD cards as its recommended models, and a 128GB SanDisk Extreme costs ยฃ28.99. The two DJI cameras can skip the card at first, thanks to their built-in storage, though 50GB is well under half of what a 128GB card holds.

Mounts for bikes, helmets and dogs

A handlebar clamp, a chest harness or a dog harness mount is an extra purchase for all seven. Plenty of third-party mounts use GoPro's two-prong fitting, while DJI and Insta360 use their own quick-release and magnetic systems.

Waiting for Black Friday

Black Friday is on 27 November this year. If the camera is a Christmas present, waiting a month to see whether the price drops is reasonable. My Black Friday UK guide has the key dates and what tends to drop. If you want to film this weekend's walk, though, the prices above are what you will pay today.

Best action cameras UK: FAQs

Is a GoPro still worth it over DJI?

It depends on your mounts. The GoPro HERO13 Black uses GoPro's two-prong fitting, which plenty of third-party mounts share, and it is ยฃ60 cheaper than the DJI Osmo Action 6 on Amazon. However, the Action 6 has a bigger sensor, built-in storage and a -20ยฐC rating against GoPro's -10ยฐC. For winter use, the DJI is the safer pick.

Do I need a 360 camera?

Only if you are happy to edit. A 360 camera like the Insta360 X5 records every direction, so you choose the angle afterwards in an app. That is ideal for skiing or cycling, where you cannot aim the camera. If you want to post clips straight from your phone, a normal action camera is quicker.

Which action camera is best for cycling?

For a commute, the DJI Osmo Action 6 handles low light best of these seven, thanks to its 1/1.1-inch sensor and f/2.0 lens. If you already own GoPro handlebar mounts, the GoPro HERO13 Black fits them directly. Either way, a handlebar mount is an extra purchase.

Which action camera is best for skiing?

Pick one rated to -20ยฐC. That means the DJI Osmo Action 6 or Action 5 Pro, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, or the Insta360 X5 if you want 360 footage. Both GoPros here are rated only to -10ยฐC.

Are action cameras waterproof without a case?

Yes, all seven are, but to different depths. The DJI Osmo Action 6 and Action 5 Pro go to 20m, the Insta360 X5 to 15m and the Ace Pro 2 to 12m. The GoPro HERO13 Black and the GO Ultra camera go to 10m, and the GoPro HERO to 5m. Rain and snow are no problem for any of them.

How much do action cameras cost in the UK?

On 27 October 2026, the seven here ranged from ยฃ199.99 for the GoPro HERO to ยฃ519 for the Insta360 X5. Add about ยฃ29 for a memory card and ยฃ25 to ยฃ45 for a spare battery, which brings the real first-year cost to between ยฃ228.98 and ยฃ592.98.

Is a phone good enough instead of an action camera?

For filming a walk, often yes. But a phone is harder to mount on a bike or helmet, it is more expensive to break, and most are not designed to be dunked or dropped. An action camera also keeps your phone free for maps and calls, which matters on a ride or a ski day.
