Most mobile networks spend their marketing budget shouting about unlimited data and free Spotify. Honest Mobile spends theirs planting trees and donating to charity. After four months using it as our daily SIM, here's our Honest Mobile review, covering signal, pricing, the app, and whether the ethical angle comes at the cost of actually being a good network.

What is Honest Mobile?

Honest Mobile is a UK mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that runs on Three's infrastructure. It launched in 2018, appeared on Dragons' Den (scooping offers from Deborah Meaden and Steven Bartlett), and has since built a reputation as the country's first B Corp-certified mobile network. The proposition is straightforward: SIM-only plans with no lock-in, a bill that drops every month you stay, and a genuine commitment to the environment. They're carbon negative, a member of 1% for the Planet, and offset their emissions through afforestation, biochar, and direct air capture.

There are three Classic SIM plans, all with unlimited UK calls, texts, 5G, Wi-Fi calling, and unrestricted hotspot use:

• 4GB: £12.15/month
• 10GB: £17.50/month
• Unlimited: £25/month (750GB fair usage, then 3G speeds)

All plans are available on 30-day rolling or 12-month terms. The 12-month option knocks a bit off the monthly price, and the loyalty discount (0.41% off every month, stacking up to 30%) means the unlimited plan can eventually drop to £17.50/month. That's a genuinely unusual deal in a market where most networks raise your bill annually.

They also offer a Smart SIM, which is a backup eSIM connecting to EE, Three, and O2 simultaneously, designed to sit alongside your main SIM and fill signal gaps. That's a separate product, though, and this review focuses on the Classic SIM.

First impressions

Signing up took about five minutes. We went with the eSIM option, which landed in our inbox almost instantly. Scanning the QR code, downloading the Honest app, and activating took another couple of minutes. If you prefer a physical SIM, they ship on recycled plastic using carbon-negative delivery, which typically arrives within a few days via first class post.

Since Honest Mobile is SIM-only, you'll need to bring your own handset. If you're after a newer phone without paying full price, Back Market is worth a look for refurbished devices at a decent discount. It pairs well with the ethos here too, since buying refurbished is better for the planet than buying new.

Transferring our number was painless. We texted PAC to 65075, got the code within seconds, and Honest handled the switch. The whole process from order to fully working SIM was done inside an hour.

First thing we noticed was the app. It's clean. Almost suspiciously clean. There's no bloated rewards programme, no gamification, no upselling. You see your usage, your bill, and your plan. You can switch plan at any time. That's essentially it. After years of networks trying to flog add-ons every time we opened their app, it felt like fresh air.

The experience

Signal and coverage

Honest Mobile runs on Three's network, which covers 99.8% of the UK population. In London, coverage has been rock solid. We've used it across zones 1 to 4 daily, on the Tube (where Wi-Fi calling picks up the slack), in office buildings, and in cafes tucked down side streets. No dropped calls, no dead spots that weren't also dead on our previous network.

Outside London, we've tested it in the Cotswolds and along the south coast. Coverage held up well in towns and on major roads. In very rural areas, Three's network can thin out, and Honest inherits that limitation. If you're in a genuinely remote area, it's worth checking Ofcom's coverage checker before switching.

Data speeds

5G is included on every plan at no extra cost. Honest claims average speeds of 226.3Mbps on 5G, which aligns with Three's broader network performance. In practice, we've seen download speeds north of 150Mbps in central London and comfortably above 50Mbps on 4G elsewhere. There's no noticeable throttling or deprioritisation compared to being a direct Three customer. If anything, the speeds have been slightly faster than what we were getting on our previous provider.

The app

As mentioned, the app is stripped back. You can view your usage, switch plans, manage your account, and contact support. Honest will also send you notifications if a cheaper plan would suit your usage, which is a nice touch that works against their own revenue. On the downside, there's no detailed call log, no data usage breakdown by app, and no family management features. If you're coming from a feature-rich app like EE or Vodafone, it might feel sparse. For us, the simplicity is a feature, not a bug.

Customer service

We've had two interactions with support. The first was a question about EU roaming policy before a trip to Portugal. We messaged through the app and got a clear, human reply within about 20 minutes. The second was a minor billing query, resolved in under 10 minutes via the same channel. Honest claims an average response time of 30 seconds, which matches some Trustpilot reviews, though our experience was slightly longer. Still, the responses felt genuinely personal. No scripts, no bots pushing us through hoops.

On Trustpilot, Honest Mobile holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating from over 3,500 reviews. The recurring theme is praise for customer service, with individual team members regularly called out by name. The most common complaints relate to eSIM setup difficulties, which seem more about the technology than the network itself.

Roaming

EU roaming is included on all plans. You get five free roaming days per trip, during which you can call and text UK numbers and use up to 20GB of data as normal. From day six onwards, there's a £2 daily charge to access your allowances. There's also a 60-day fair usage cap on total roaming per year. For a week's holiday, it's perfectly fine and better than many networks that have reintroduced roaming charges post-Brexit. For longer stays, the per-day charge after five days is worth factoring in. We used it for a long weekend in Lisbon with zero issues.

If you travel outside the EU, Honest operates a daily price cap system for non-EU roaming, which keeps costs predictable. It's not free, but it's transparent.

The ethical credentials

This is where Honest Mobile genuinely differentiates itself. They're a certified B Corporation, meaning they meet verified standards for social and environmental performance. They're carbon negative, offsetting more emissions than they produce. They're a member of 1% for the Planet, donating 1% of revenue to environmental causes. And your bill contributes to reforestation projects.

Is it visible day to day? Honestly, not really. You don't get a tree-planting notification every time you make a call. But that's sort of the point. The ethical stuff runs in the background while you get a normal, functional mobile network. If you want to dig deeper, Honest publishes impact reports on their website. This isn't greenwashing; it's a structural commitment baked into how the company operates.

Value for money

Let's be straight about pricing. On raw cost, Honest Mobile is not the cheapest option in the UK.

For unlimited data on a 30-day rolling plan, here's how it stacks up:

• Honest Mobile: £25/month (dropping to £17.50 with loyalty)
• SMARTY: £20/month (sometimes promotional at £17)
• giffgaff: £25/month rolling (or £15 on 18-month contract)

So on day one, SMARTY undercuts Honest by £5/month. giffgaff matches it on rolling, but beats it if you commit to 18 months. However, the loyalty discount changes the equation over time. After a year with Honest, your bill has already started to drop. After two and a half years, you're paying less than SMARTY's standard price. That's a genuinely different model from every other MVNO.

Compared to the big networks directly, Honest is significantly cheaper. Going to Three, EE, or Vodafone for unlimited data typically costs £30 or more, and they'll raise your price annually on top of that. With Honest, you get Three's actual network without the corporate price tag or the mid-contract hikes.

The 4GB and 10GB tiers are less competitive on pure price. You can find 10GB for under £10 elsewhere. But again, no other network is reducing your bill each month or donating a portion of it to environmental causes. You're paying a modest premium for a fundamentally different kind of mobile company.

The verdict

Honest Mobile is a properly good network that happens to be ethical, not an ethical network that happens to be adequate. Signal is solid (it's Three's infrastructure underneath), the app is clean, support is human, and the pricing is fair if not rock-bottom on day one. The loyalty discount model is unlike anything else in the UK market and genuinely rewards you for staying.

The only reason it's not 5/5 Ice cold is the upfront price gap on unlimited data compared to SMARTY, and the lower-data plans being a tougher sell on pure value. If those few extra pounds a month don't bother you, and you like knowing your phone bill is actively funding environmental projects rather than shareholder dividends, this is a very easy switch.

After four months, we have zero intention of switching back.
