Four artists, one deadline
The Hospital Rooms poster sale shuts at noon on Sunday 13 September, and there are four prints in it: Chantal Joffe, Celia Paul, Grayson Perry and Jules de Balincourt. Each one is an A2 giclée at £100, and the money goes towards the artwork this charity commissions for NHS mental health wards. Nothing rolls over afterwards. Only the copies ordered before Sunday get printed at all, so the number of purchases decides the edition size.
Section 01 / The campaign
Ten posters, ten years, a thousand hospitals
Altogether ten artists have given a work each. A full set goes to a thousand NHS mental health hospitals.
Since 2016 Hospital Rooms has been putting commissioned artwork into NHS psychiatric wards, secure units and inpatient settings, and this year it turns ten. To mark that, ten artists have each donated a poster. The charity is giving a full set of all ten to a thousand mental health hospitals, which comes to ten thousand artworks going up on walls that can be quite cold and clinical.
Meanwhile, the same posters are on sale to the rest of us, which is the part that funds it. Hospital Rooms is registered charity number 1168101, and King & McGaw and Victoria Miro both back Drop Two, since Victoria Miro represents three of the four artists in it. Almost all of the work the charity commissions stays within the hospitals, meaning that for many of us these editions are a rare chance to see the works.
Hospital Rooms puts the claim modestly. Art does not replace clinical care, the charity says, it sits alongside it, restoring dignity, calm and a sense of the world beyond the ward. People on these wards are among the least likely in the country to come across art at all, and they can be inside for weeks or months at a time.

What you are actually buying
All four are A2, all four are £100, and all four were still available on 9 September.

A young woman sits with a white electric guitar across her lap, head tipped towards the strings, eyes shut. She is wearing a lilac jacket over a long black dress, and the dress spreads out into one flat mass of near-black that swallows most of the lower half of the picture. Behind her, a window in soft blue, broken by two cream verticals.
Joffe paints the face in very few marks. The mouth is a single red stroke, the eyelids are two, and the neck of the guitar cuts across the whole canvas in pale yellow. Esme is her daughter, and has been turning up in her mother's paintings since she was born, which the National Portrait Gallery notes in its entry on one of the self-portraits.
For a wall where you want a person rather than a pattern.

Three peonies, dusty pink going over into rust, on a ground the colour of old paper. Above them, a chalky white halo sits where Paul has scrubbed the surface back. Then, from roughly halfway down, the whole thing starts to run: every stem and every petal releases a long vertical drip that reaches the bottom edge, green out of the leaves, pink out of the heads.
So Paul gives the flowers real attention, then lets them go. She has signed and dated it in pencil in the bottom right corner, and written the title in the bottom left, both small enough that you have to go looking.
For anyone who likes flowers better once they have started to turn.

Pen and coloured pencil, worked right out to the edges. A figure with a green bob stands in a pink patterned dress beside a lion about twice her size, its mane drawn as coral spirals, its face closer to human than cat. Meanwhile a giraffe with pink bat wings flies over the pair of them. On the left, a black cat with red stripes climbs a bamboo stalk.
Above all that sits a sky of dense black cross-hatching with a red spiral for a sun, and one palm tree shoving through it. The ground is a carpet of pink flower discs on green, and skeletal dogs, a rabbit and two monkeys are picking their way across it. There is no empty paper anywhere, which is either the appeal or the problem, depending on the room.
For the wall that can take a great deal of pink.

A turquoise waterfall comes down the middle of a pale cliff, and the whole painting turns around it. Four small figures stand on a yellow shore at the bottom, close enough together to read as one group. Two more are up at the top by a white house, with a ladder running up the rock beside them.
Palms and dark conifers crowd the lower corners, autumn trees line the very top edge, and the water in the foreground swirls in bands of teal and yellow. Everybody in it is tiny. Consequently the cliff, the water and the trees take up almost everything else.
For anyone who wants something they can look at for a while.

Section 03 / Host and Guest
The show closes before the sale does
Host|Guest is at Victoria Miro until Saturday 12 September, and two events are left.
Alongside the Hospital Rooms poster sale there is an exhibition, and it has a shorter fuse than the prints do. Hospital Rooms: Host|Guest has been in London Gallery I at Victoria Miro, 16 Wharf Road, N1 7RW, since 3 September, and it comes down on Saturday 12 September. Admission is free and there is no booking. The gallery opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
The show gathers artists from across the ten years of the programme, including recreations of the large works made for hospitals this year. Two events remain, both on that final Saturday: a British Sign Language tour at 11am, and a cardboard reliefs workshop with Xavier Laurent Leopold from 2pm to 4pm. The charity's What's On page lists both. The anniversary panel talk has already been and gone.
So the weekend has an order to it. See the show on Saturday if you are going to, then decide about a poster on Sunday morning. The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is the other London version of buying art against a clock, and we reviewed it in June.
Section 04 / Afterwards
Drop One has gone, and more are coming
The charity promised ten posters. Two drops have happened so far.
The Hospital Rooms poster sale runs in drops, and Drop One has already closed. Drop Two is these four. Because the campaign runs to ten posters, more releases must still be coming. The charity has not published dates, though, or named the remaining artists. Consequently there is no way to plan around the next one, and no waiting list to join.
Section 05 / The practical bits
Paper, size, numbering, dispatch
Somerset Satin 330gsm, 420 by 594mm, numbered but unsigned, dispatched by 1 December.
Each poster is a giclée print on Somerset Satin 330gsm paper, at 420 by 594mm, which is A2. They come numbered and unsigned, and they are sold unframed. Every order ships in a protective poster tube with a certificate carrying a blind emboss of the Hospital Rooms logo.
Dispatch is the bit worth planning around. Printing only starts after the window closes, so the charity dispatches on or before 1 December 2026. This is not a poster that turns up next week. None of the four product pages quotes a postage figure, so you settle that at the checkout. The charity credits the photography of the works to Studio Damian Griffiths.
