I run Smarty across most of my family, including my mum, and I have set up Honest Mobile for relatives too. So the verdicts below come from living with both, not just reading spec sheets.

In my experience, Smarty's 5G is solid and quick for everyday use. Because it rides on Three rather than Vodafone's standalone 5G, it does not hit the very top speeds, yet it streams and browses without drama. I have also run a Smarty SIM in a Huawei 5G home hub as a backup to our eero mesh setup when the home broadband dipped. For the most part it coped well, handling Zoom calls and streaming, though it did struggle with two video calls or two streams at once.
One clear Smarty weak spot is upload speed, which noticeably lags. Honest Mobile, by contrast, feels faster and steadier in both directions. So for big photo uploads, backups or video calls, Honest has the edge in my testing.

Smarty keeps its menu simple and cheap. Plans start from around £6 a month for 5GB, and the unlimited-data plan normally sits at £20, often dropping to about £17 on a new-customer offer. Honest Mobile, meanwhile, runs three tiers only: 4GB, 10GB and Unlimited. On a 12-month plan, 4GB costs £12.15 and Unlimited costs £22.50, which then falls to around £17.50 once the loyalty discount kicks in. Both include unlimited UK calls and texts as standard.

So on headline price, Smarty clearly leads, especially at the budget end where its £6 plan gives more data than Honest's entry 4GB. Still, Honest narrows the gap over the years, because it trims your bill by 5% for every year you stay, up to a 30% discount. Plus it pledges no mid-contract price rises, which is rare in this market.

Both stay flexible, yet they handle leftover data very differently.
Smarty runs every plan on a 30-day rolling basis, so you can change or cancel each month. On top of that, it credits unused data back at £1 per GB on your next bill, which suits light or unpredictable months. Honest Mobile offers 30-day or 12-month plans, and it lets you switch tiers whenever you need more data. Rather than rolling data over, Honest reviews your usage and tells you at month end whether a cheaper plan would save you money.
On the family front, Smarty's group setup is properly handy. We run most of the family on it, including my mum, which unlocks the group discount across every linked plan. Linking the accounts was simple. The billing did confuse us at first, because the group owner pays while each person still manages their own plan, yet once it was set up it ran smoothly.

Honest Mobile also runs in-app offers, a little like Sprive or Airtime Rewards. They look great on paper, yet in practice I rarely remember to open the Honest app before I shop, so the savings slip past. Airtime works better for me, precisely because it runs quietly in the background. Still, the way Honest cuts your price over time feels effortless, which I love.
Honest also sells a separate Smart SIM, which can hop between UK networks and roam globally. The idea is clever, yet it adds another subscription that mostly sits dormant, so I cancelled mine. When I tried to set my aunt up, explaining what a Smart SIM even was proved too fiddly, and her Fairphone did not support it anyway. Honest cancelled the plan without fuss.
