Three ways in, and one box you replace if you change your mind
A smart home starter kit is one decision followed by about five purchases. The decision is whose app you want to open when a lamp will not turn off: Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa. Everything after that got easier, because a Matter bulb or plug moves to a different app instead of going in a drawer. So switching sides later costs you the hub and nothing else. Meanwhile the cheapest way in is an Echo Dot at ยฃ54.99, and that is also the only one of the three starting points that cannot run battery sensors.

Do you still need a hub for a smart home starter kit?
Buy one. A house run from five different brand apps is not a smart home, it is five apps.
My recommendation is the same whatever you buy: start with the hub, then hang everything off it. Plenty of kit sells itself as needing no hub, and in a narrow sense that is true. A Tapo bulb works from the Tapo app. The trouble arrives at device four, when the lights are in one app, the plug is in a second, the doorbell is in a third, and none of them can trigger each other. A hub is what turns that pile into one app, one voice command and automations that cross brands.
All three platforms require one in any case, and each says so on its own support pages. Apple's home hub page states that you have to set one up before the Home app will take a Matter accessory. It names three options: HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV. Google says the same: a hub for Google Home has to be on your network before you can add a Matter device at all. Amazon publishes a list of which Echo and eero models carry a Thread border router, which answers the same question from the other end.
Wi-Fi devices versus Thread devices. A Matter device talks over Wi-Fi or over Thread. Wi-Fi suits anything plugged into the mains, such as a bulb, a plug or a camera. Thread is a low-power mesh, so it suits the battery things: door sensors, motion sensors, leak sensors. Google's own explanation of the difference is the clearest one published, and it is blunt about the catch. Thread devices need a Thread border router, and not every hub has one.

The ยฃ54.99 door and the ยฃ99.99 door. Amazon's own developer documentation lists the Echo models with a Thread border router built in, and the ordinary Echo Dot is not among them. The Echo Dot Max is. So Alexa gets you started for the least money and then charges you ยฃ45 more the day you buy a battery sensor. Apple and Google do not have that split, because their cheapest current controllers both carry Thread.

The tidiest app of the three, the strictest hardware list, and still no wall panel.

The cheapest thing Apple sells that turns Matter accessories into a working home.
Apple's list of home hubs runs to three items: HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV. The mini is the cheap one, it carries Thread, and it doubles as the kitchen speaker, so most people start here rather than with the telly box. Set it up once and the Home app stops being a remote control and starts running automations while you are out.
The hub-and-speaker problem. It is the hub and the speaker in one object. So the thing you want to carry into the garden is also the thing holding your automations together. Buy a second one, or put the hub job on an Apple TV, before you start moving it around.

Apple sells two Apple TV 4K models: 64GB over Wi-Fi at ยฃ199, and 128GB with Ethernet at ยฃ249. Read the specification page and Thread appears under the Wi-Fi plus Ethernet model only. Apple's own support note says the same thing from the other side: Thread accessories want a Thread-enabled hub such as HomePod mini or the Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi plus Ethernet.
So the ยฃ50 gap is not really about storage. It is the difference between a box that can run battery sensors and a box that cannot.

Amazon sells the Echo Hub, an 8in control panel you screw to the wall for ยฃ169.99. Google's route is a display or a speaker with the assistant built in. Apple sells neither, and its home hub list is three devices, none of which is a screen you tap. The closest thing in an Apple house is an iPhone or an iPad on a stand running the Home app. That works as a remote, and it does not count as the hub.
That is a real difference between the three routes rather than a detail. If the picture in your head is a panel by the front door, Apple is the one route that cannot sell you one.

This is the one piece of kit I would buy first in an Apple house, because it does two jobs. It is a 2K doorbell with HomeKit Secure Video. It is also a Matter controller, a Thread border router and a Zigbee hub, so it brings the sensors along with it. Face recognition runs on the device rather than in a cloud account.
The iCloud plan behind Secure Video. HomeKit Secure Video recordings need an iCloud plan with enough storage, so the free version of the feature is not the whole feature.

Route 02 / Google Home
For the Google home
Thread comes as standard at ยฃ99, and the hardware range has shrunk to almost nothing.

Google's cheapest current controller is also a Thread border router, so there is no second purchase.
Google publishes two lists: hubs that handle Matter over Wi-Fi only, and hubs that handle Wi-Fi and Thread. The Home Speaker sits on the second list, alongside the Nest Hub, the Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and the Google TV Streamer. Consequently a single ยฃ99.99 purchase covers both kinds of device, which is not true on Alexa.
The three-product Google Store. On 17 September 2026 the smart home section of the Google Store UK held exactly three products: this speaker and two Nest Cams. The Nest Mini has gone from it and there is no Google-made doorbell to buy. A route with three boxes in it is a thin route.

Same money, same Thread list, different room. At ยฃ99 the Streamer replaces a Chromecast behind the television and carries the hub job at the same time. That suits anyone who would rather not add a speaker to the kitchen. Equally, it is the better choice in a house with thick walls, because it sits by the router and stays plugged in.
The streaming box you may not want. It only earns its keep if you actually want a streaming box. As a hub alone it is a large thing to buy for a job the ยฃ99.99 speaker also does.

The indoor Nest Cam is ยฃ89.99 at the Google Store and ยฃ69.99 on Amazon UK, and the outdoor 2K model is ยฃ119.99. Both drop straight into the Google Home app with almost no setup. For a Google house they are the obvious pick, because nothing else appears in the app with a live thumbnail quite as neatly.
Google Home Premium at ยฃ8 a month. Google Home Premium is ยฃ8 a month or ยฃ80 a year for the standard tier, and ยฃ16 a month or ยฃ160 a year for the advanced one. Before you buy two cameras, price the subscription over three years, because that is where the real cost of a camera sits.

The cheapest way in, the widest hardware range, and the one split you have to plan around.

ยฃ54.99 buys a Matter controller. ยฃ99.99 buys one that can also run Thread sensors.
The Echo Dot is the least expensive entry to a smart home starter kit in the UK, and for bulbs, plugs and cameras it is enough. Thread is where it stops. Amazon's own developer documentation lists every Echo and eero with a Thread border router inside. The Dot is absent. The Dot Max, the Echo Hub, the Echo Studio and the Echo Show models are all on it.
The Thread gap. Battery sensors are the whole point of Thread, so if you expect to add door or motion sensors, buy the Dot Max now rather than the Dot twice.

Echo Hub
An 8in touch panel that mounts on the wall and shows your devices as buttons rather than as a voice command you have to remember. It carries Thread, so it covers the sensor job as well. In practice it is the thing people picture when they say smart home, and Amazon is the only one of the three selling it.

Amazon owns Blink, which is why the setup is the easiest of any camera here and why the prices are low: ยฃ69.99 for the 2K doorbell, ยฃ29.99 for the Mini 2 plug-in camera. I have written up living with the Blink doorbell separately, and it does the job for the money.
Blink's Alexa-only lock-in. Blink is Alexa kit rather than Matter kit. If you move to Apple Home or Google Home later, the cameras do not come with you, so this is the one part of an Alexa starter kit that locks you in.

One box, two jobs
The speaker in each route
On every route except the two television boxes, the hub is also the speaker, so the music comes free with the automation.
Apple, HomePod mini at ยฃ129. It is the hub from route one and a perfectly good kitchen speaker, and a pair of them runs in stereo. If the sound is the point rather than the automation, the full-size HomePod is ยฃ349 and is the better speaker by a distance.
Google, Google Home Speaker at ยฃ99.99. The same box that carries Thread also plays the radio, which is the neatest arrangement of the three. Google TV Streamer buyers need a separate speaker, since a streaming box has no sound of its own.
Alexa, Echo Dot at ยฃ54.99 or Echo Dot Max at ยฃ99.99. The Dot is the cheapest smart speaker in this guide and the Max is louder as well as Thread-capable, so the upgrade buys two things at once.
Sound quality is a different question from hub duty, and the three ranges are not close. My smart speakers comparison puts HomePod, Sonos and Echo side by side on that alone.

The kit that survives a change of mind
Every item below works in Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa, so it stays when the hub goes.
This is the part that makes the whole thing cheaper than it used to be. Pick the hub for the app you like, then buy Matter kit underneath it, and a change of heart in two years costs you one box rather than a houseful. A router that doubles as a Thread border router, which quietly fixes the Alexa problem.
Every device on this page talks to your Wi-Fi, and a smart home starter kit adds a dozen of them in a weekend. So a weak router shows up as a plug that drops out, not just as slow Netflix. I have lived with eero mesh at home, and my eero review covers the day-to-day in full.
The smart home reason is less obvious. eero lists the eero 7 as a Thread border router and as a Matter controller. Amazon's own Thread list names it too, alongside the Echo Dot Max. As a result, an Alexa house on a plain ยฃ54.99 Echo Dot gets its Thread radio from the router instead.
The Alexa-first Thread network. Apple's home hub list and Google's Thread hub list do not include eero. So in those houses, keep the HomePod mini or the Google speaker as the border router, and treat the eero as simply very good Wi-Fi.
The alternatives. A bigger house on fast fibre suits the eero Pro 7 at ยฃ299.99. A Google house can use Google Nest Wifi Pro instead, which does sit on Google's Thread hub list, at ยฃ369.97 for a three-pack on Amazon UK. And if all you need is signal in every room, one TP-Link Deco X50 is ยฃ79.99.

One bridge, and the lights answer to Apple, Google and Alexa at the same time.
Hue's own compatibility page lists Alexa, Apple Home and Siri, Google Assistant, SmartThings and Matter, which is the widest support of anything here. The entry kit is the Hue Bridge plus two Essential B22 bulbs at ยฃ68.04, and the Bridge is what makes the rest of the range work properly rather than over Bluetooth. I reviewed the newer Bridge Pro separately if you are weighing the upgrade.

A light strip behind something
Nothing sells a smart home to a sceptical household faster than a strip of light behind the television or under a kitchen unit. The Hue Lightstrip Plus v4 is ยฃ99.99 for two metres and runs off the Bridge you already have. For a third of that, WiZ is Signify's other brand, its strips carry Matter, and ten metres is ยฃ35.22.
The price per metre. Hue's strip is expensive per metre and the extensions add up. WiZ needs its own app for setup and its colours are less exact next to a Hue bulb in the same room.

A tenner, Matter certified, and it tells you what the thing plugged into it actually costs to run.
At ยฃ9.99 this is the cheapest way to make something dumb behave, and the energy monitoring turns it into a measuring tool as well as a switch. It is the pick in my best smart plugs guide, there is a longer P110M review, and a four-pack is ยฃ38.99 if you want one per room.
The 2.4GHz-only radio. TP-Link's specification says 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, so a phone sitting on the 5GHz band can make setup fiddly. Switch bands for two minutes and it behaves.

Sensors are what turn a set of remote-controlled lamps into a house that does things on its own. The P2 is a Thread device, so it runs for months on a battery and joins the mesh instead of sitting on your Wi-Fi. Stick it on the front door and the hall light knows when you come home.
The Thread border router line. The Amazon listing says it plainly: requires a Thread border router. On an Echo Dot alone it will not work, which is the ยฃ45 upgrade from the Alexa section arriving in your basket a month later, unless your router is an eero.

A dual-lens 4K indoor camera that is also a Matter controller and a Zigbee and Thread hub, and it records to a microSD card in the camera rather than to a plan you pay for monthly. It works with Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home, which is what a Nest Cam or a Blink Mini cannot claim.

One radiator valve is the cheapest way to feel what heating control does, and this is the rare one that speaks Matter over Thread or Zigbee, so it lands in whichever app you chose. Fit it in the room you actually sit in, rather than doing the whole house at once, and let the schedule run for a fortnight before deciding.

The boiler question. A valve controls one radiator, not the boiler, so it saves you nothing if the heating is off at the wall. Pair it with a thermostat or the schedule does half a job.

An 85dB alarm with up to ten years of battery, which pushes a notification to your phone when you are out and can trigger every light in the house on its way. Aqara lists HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home support, so it reports into the same app as everything else above.
The Aqara hub requirement. Aqara states it plainly: this needs an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub, and to see it inside a Matter ecosystem you need a Matter controller plus a Matter-capable Aqara hub. The G410 doorbell earlier on this page is both, which is one more reason it earns its price.
Fit it alongside your mains alarms rather than instead of them. A smart alarm is a better notification, not a replacement for the fire safety kit a house is meant to have.

A robot vacuum that turns up in Apple Home and Alexa, from the brand behind the ยฃ9.99 plug.
I gave Dyson's ยฃ1,049.99 robot a zero in my Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai review, so it has no place in a starter kit. Instead, the Tapo RV30 Max Plus does the everyday job for ยฃ179.99. It vacuums and mops, maps each room with LiDAR, and the dock empties the bin for you.
Crucially, TP-Link's Matter guide for its robot vacuums names the RV30 Max Plus. The same page lists Apple Home and Alexa as places it appears through Matter, so it joins the hub you already chose.
The Google Home gap. That same guide says Google Home does not yet support Matter robot vacuums. So in a Google house you run it from the Tapo app, with Google Assistant voice commands on top. It is also no powerhouse: the suction figure is 5,300Pa, against the 18,000Pa Dyson quotes for its robot.

Fans, and a Honeywell TurboForce on a plug
Matter has a fan device type, so in principle this should be easy. In practice the certified fans in the Alliance database are American ceiling fans, and a British flat does not have one. Dyson's own purifier pages offer voice control through Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri instead of Matter.
Therefore the honest answer for a UK reader is a ยฃ9.99 smart plug and an ordinary fan, with one limitation worth knowing before you try it. A plug can only cut the power, so a fan with electronic controls comes back on at whatever setting it lost, and some come back off altogether. Mechanical dial fans survive this trick. Touch-button ones often do not.
That is why the Honeywell TurboForce is the one I would put on the plug. Honeywell's manual has you turn a control knob to one of three speeds, so it comes back exactly where you left it. It is small enough for a desk, and the head pivots through 90 degrees.

Before you buy a smart home starter kit
Four things that decide whether this costs you ยฃ100 or ยฃ400, and none of them are on the box.
Lock-in is now a hub problem, not a house problem
Five years ago picking Alexa meant your lights, plugs and sensors were Alexa's. Today a Matter bulb is a Matter bulb, so the thing you are really committing to is the app and the hub that runs it. Buy Matter kit underneath and you can change your mind for the price of one box. Buy Blink cameras or Nest Cams and those two are the exception, because they answer only to the company that made them.
Wi-Fi or Thread decides which hub you need
Mains-powered things are usually Wi-Fi, so a bulb, a plug or a camera will work on any Matter hub. Battery things are usually Thread, and Thread needs a border router. Google's explanation is the clearest published version of why: Thread devices mesh with each other, extend range and last far longer on a battery. Consequently the question is not whether you want Thread, it is whether you want sensors.
Subscriptions are the real cost of a camera
Most of the hardware here costs between ยฃ9.99 and ยฃ169.99, and a camera plan quietly outruns all of it. Google Home Premium is ยฃ8 a month or ยฃ80 a year, so two years of it costs more than the camera. Apple's Secure Video leans on an iCloud plan you may already pay for. Aqara records to a card in the device, which is the cheapest long-run answer and the one nobody advertises.
Your router matters more than you would think
Google's setup page carries a warning: without IPv6 enabled on your network, Matter setup can appear to work and then fail later. Check the setting before you blame the device. Equally, most cheap Wi-Fi kit, Tapo included, is 2.4GHz only, so a phone locked to the 5GHz band will refuse to find a plug that is sitting a metre away. If your router is the one your broadband provider posted, the eero pick above is the upgrade I would make first.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a hub in 2026 if everything is Matter?
Yes. Apple, Google and Amazon all require a hub before their app will accept a Matter accessory, and each says so on its own support pages. What changed is that one hub now serves every brand, so you need one box rather than one per manufacturer.
Which ecosystem should I pick?
Pick the app that matches the phone in your pocket, because that is the app you will actually open. Alexa is cheapest to start at ยฃ54.99 and has the widest hardware range. Google costs ยฃ99 and includes Thread from the beginning. Apple is ยฃ129 and the tidiest to use, although it sells no panel, no camera and no doorbell of its own.
Is a smart home starter kit worth buying as a bundle?
Rarely, because bundles tend to pair a hub with own-brand devices that only work with that hub. Buying the hub on its own and adding Matter devices underneath costs about the same and lets the kit move with you. The exception is the Hue starter kit, where the Bridge and the bulbs genuinely belong together.
Will it work with UK plugs and a standard broadband router?
Yes, with two checks. Turn IPv6 on, because Google states that Matter needs it and a setup can look successful without it. Then join your phone to the 2.4GHz band during setup, since Tapo, WiZ and most budget kit do not use 5GHz at all.
What happens if I switch from Alexa to Apple Home later?
Your Matter devices move across. A Tapo plug, a Hue light or an Aqara sensor is added to the new app through a pairing code, and multi-admin means it can answer to both during the changeover. The Blink cameras do not come with you, and neither do Nest Cams in the other direction.
How much does a sensible starting set cost?
An Echo Dot Max at ยฃ99.99, a Hue starter kit at ยฃ68.04, a Tapo plug at ยฃ9.99 and a door sensor at ยฃ26.99 comes to ยฃ205.01 and gives you lights, a switch, an automation trigger and voice control. The same shopping list on Google is ยฃ205.01 with the Home Speaker, and ยฃ234.02 on Apple with a HomePod mini.
