So, which Huel to buy? The range has grown well beyond one bag of powder, and that is exactly why people get stuck. In short, Huel now covers complete meals (Powder, Black Edition, Essential and Diet), grab-and-go options (bottles and bars), hot meals (Hot & Savoury) and a few add-ons (Daily Greens, Complete Protein and vitamins). Crucially, those last three are supplements, not meals, so treat them separately. Below, I compare every option with honest pros and cons.

The quick answer. For most people, Powder is the sensible first buy. Meanwhile, Essential is the budget pick, Black Edition is the protein pick, Diet is the low-calorie pick, and the bottles, bars and hot meals are all about convenience. The greens and protein add-ons come last.

Section 01 / Complete meal powders

The powders: your core meal choice

These four are all nutritionally complete, all vegan, and all mixed with water. So the decision comes down to protein, calories and price.

Huel Powder

Powder is the original complete meal, and it is still the one most people should try first. Each serving gives you around 400 calories, 30g of plant protein and 26 essential vitamins and minerals. Because the macros sit in a balanced ratio, it works as a proper meal rather than just a protein hit.

Pros

  • Balanced, everyday nutrition
  • 10 flavours to rotate
  • Sensible middle price

Cons

  • Less protein than Black Edition
  • Higher carb than Diet or Black

for the person who just wants a fast, balanced meal without overthinking it

From £1.59 per meal (£27 per bag, 17 meals, on subscription)

02 For the protein chaser

Huel Black Edition

Black Edition is the higher-protein, lower-sugar sibling. You still get a 400 calorie, complete meal, yet protein jumps to 40g and the sugar drops right down. It is also gluten-free, with 8g or more of fibre and no artificial sweeteners. Naturally, it costs a little more.

Pros

  • 40g protein per meal
  • Low sugar, gluten-free
  • More filling for many

Cons

  • Pricier per meal
  • Some find it thicker or drier

for the gym-goer who wants a meal, not just another protein shake

From £1.79 per meal (£30.50 per bag, 17 meals, on subscription)

It shares the same scoop-and-shake routine as Powder, so day to day it feels much the same.

03 For the tight budget

Huel Essential

Essential is the most affordable 400 calorie complete meal, and that is the whole point. Each serving still delivers 20g of protein and all 26 vitamins and minerals. However, you get fewer flavours and a simpler formula than Powder. For sheer cost per meal, though, nothing else in the range beats it.

Pros

  • Cheapest full meal
  • Still nutritionally complete
  • Great starter option

Cons

  • Lower protein (20g)
  • Fewer flavours

for the student or saver who wants complete nutrition at the lowest price

From £1.09 per meal (£24 per bag, on subscription)

04 For a calorie deficit

Huel Diet

Diet is the newest powder, and it is built for weight management. Each serving is a lighter 200 calories, yet it still packs 20g protein, 5g fibre and all 26 vitamins and minerals. Because it is half the calories of a standard meal, it suits anyone counting calories. Even so, it is a tool, not magic.

Pros

  • Only 200 calories a meal
  • Lowest price per serving
  • Still complete nutrition

Cons

  • May not fill you up alone
  • Not for maintaining or bulking

for the calorie-counter who wants a complete meal without the calories

From £1.00 per meal (£34 per bag, on subscription)

Meal replacements can support weight loss when they replace higher-calorie meals, as the NHS Eatwell Guide context makes clear. Still, check with a GP or dietitian first.

The verdict in one panel

Start with Powder or Essential. Upgrade from there.

If you are new to Huel, Powder is the balanced way in, and Essential is the cheaper way in. Once you know you like the routine, Black Edition adds protein and Diet cuts calories. The bottles, bars, hot meals and greens are all situational extras rather than starting points.

Section 02 / Grab-and-go

Bottles and bars: convenience first

Next come the ready-made options. Naturally, you pay more per meal for zero prep, but sometimes that trade is worth it.

05 For no prep at all

Huel Ready-to-drink

Ready-to-drink is the original meal in a bottle, with 20g protein and all 26 nutrients, pre-portioned and chilled. Moreover, there are two upgrades: Black Edition Ready-to-drink pushes protein to 35g, while the new Lite bottle drops to just 190 calories with 25g protein. So there is a bottle for most goals.

Pros

  • Truly grab and go
  • Black and Lite versions exist
  • No shaker needed

Cons

  • Far pricier per meal
  • Heavier to store and carry

for the commuter who will not measure powder at 7am

From £3.17 per bottle (Lite from £3.25, Black from £3.42, on subscription)

06 For between meals

Huel Complete Bars

The Complete Nutrition Bar is the snack of the range. Each bar is soft and chewy, with up to 15g protein, fibre and 26 vitamins and minerals. Importantly, it is smaller than a full meal, so treat it as a proper pick-me-up rather than lunch. As a desk-drawer backup, though, it is excellent.

Pros

  • Genuinely tasty
  • No mixing or bottle
  • Great emergency snack

Cons

  • Snack-sized, not a full meal
  • Costlier per calorie

for the person who skips lunch and regrets it by three o'clock

From £2.29 per bar (£27.50 per box of 12, on subscription)

Section 03 / Hot meals

Hot & Savoury: when a shake will not do

07 For a warm, savoury meal

Huel Hot & Savoury

Not everyone wants a sweet shake, and this is the answer. Hot & Savoury is a just-add-water meal of grains, pasta or noodles with real vegetables, at around 400 calories and up to 25g protein. There is also a new Lite Ramen for lighter days. Therefore, it suits desk lunches far better than a smoothie.

Pros

  • Actual hot, savoury food
  • Ready in minutes
  • New Lite Ramen option

Cons

  • Texture divides people
  • Needs hot water on hand

for the office worker sick of another chocolate shake

From £2.80 per meal (£19.60 per box of 7, on subscription)

Section 04 / Add-ons, not meals

The supplements: extras, not replacements

Finally, three products often get mistaken for meals. In reality, they sit alongside your food rather than replacing it.

Huel Daily Greens is a supergreens powder you drink alongside meals. At roughly 23 calories, it packs 91 vitamins, minerals and nutrients, plus adaptogens and probiotics. However, it will never replace lunch. From £1.50 per serving. Read our full Daily Greens review before adding it.

Huel Complete Protein is a protein powder, not a meal. Each serving gives 20g plant protein and 26 vitamins for around 100 calories. So it complements training days rather than replacing food. From £0.87 per serving, which makes it the cheapest scoop in the range.

Huel Daily A-Z Vitamins is a lightly sparkling vitamin drink with 26 vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. Again, it is a top-up, not a meal. From £1.65 per can. Handy, but easily the most skippable if budget is tight.

All prices and specs were checked on Huel's UK site on 6 July 2026, and they can change.

Powder feeds you, Black feeds the gym, Diet cuts the calories, and the greens just top up the tank.

How to choose which Huel to buy for you

On budget: Essential and Diet are the cheapest per meal. Bottles and bars cost the most.

On protein: Black Edition leads at 40g, then Hot & Savoury and Black bottles at up to 35g.

On weight loss: Diet or the Lite bottle keep calories low while staying complete.

On convenience: Ready-to-drink and bars win when you cannot mix a shake.

On hot food: only Hot & Savoury delivers a warm, savoury meal.

On nutrition gaps: Daily Greens, Complete Protein and Daily A-Z fill specific holes. If you would rather cook, our guide to the best vegan meal kits in the UK is worth a look too.

The honest downsides

No range is perfect, so here are the caveats. First, taste and texture divide people, and you may need a few flavours before one clicks. Next, there is an adjustment period, because the high fibre can upset your stomach at first. Then there is cost creep, since it is easy to add greens, protein and vitamins until the basket balloons.

Also, meal replacements suit some routines far better than others. They shine on busy mornings, yet they are no substitute for a varied diet over the long term. Finally, if you have a medical condition, take medication or have specific dietary needs, do check with a GP or registered dietitian first. Ultimately, this is my personal take, not medical advice.

Which Huel to buy: frequently asked questions

Which Huel is best?

For most people, Powder is the best all-rounder, because it balances price, protein and flavour. However, the best Huel to buy really depends on your goal, whether that is budget, protein or lower calories.

Which Huel is cheapest?

Diet is the lowest price per meal at around £1.00, though it is only 200 calories. For a full 400 calorie meal, Essential is the cheapest at around £1.09.

What is the difference between Huel Powder and Black Edition?

Both are complete 400 calorie meals. Black Edition simply has more protein (40g versus 30g), less sugar and a higher price. Powder, meanwhile, keeps carbs higher for a more balanced everyday meal.

Is Huel Diet good for weight loss?

It can help, since a 200 calorie complete meal makes a calorie deficit easier. Even so, no single product guarantees weight loss, so pair it with an overall balanced diet.

Can you live on Huel alone?

You can in theory, because the meals are nutritionally complete. In practice, though, variety and whole foods still matter, so one or two Huel meals a day works best for most.

Are Huel bars a meal?

Not quite. The bars are snack-sized at around 200 calories, so treat them as a top-up between meals rather than a full lunch.
