Current accounts2026 Edit

The best current account is the one you actually enjoy opening

Picking the best current account in 2026 is no longer just about interest. It is about the app you tap ten times a day, the perks that quietly pay you back, and the switch bonus that lands in a week. So I have ranked the accounts I actually use, judged on design, everyday feel and real numbers, then grouped the rest by the job they do best.

Want the Monzo refer-a-friend bonus?

Monzo runs a refer-a-friend scheme where you and a friend can both get a bonus. The amount is set by Monzo and shown in-app, so I keep the current offer and the steps to claim it updated on our referral page.

Get the Monzo referral bonus

Below, every account gets the same treatment: the monthly cost, any switch bonus and its conditions, the interest as an AER, the one feature that stands out, my honest design take, who it suits, and the single thing that annoys me. First, here is the quick index. Tap any pick to jump straight to it.

Section 01 / The ranked four

My top picks, in order

These four are the accounts I keep coming back to. The order is mine, based on how they feel to live with, not just the rate table.

01 For the everyday

Monzo

Monzo is my main account, and it runs everything: bills, shared tabs, spending, the lot. It is a fully licensed UK bank, so this is not an e-money wallet dressed up as one.

Monzo app showing the coral debit card and recent activity feed on an iPhone

Above all, the detail is what wins me over. I can send a link or a QR code for people to pay me, freeze the card with one tap, and see shared tabs at a glance. When I land abroad, it pings me the exchange rate instead of a scary fee. Meanwhile the perks quietly add up: on the Perks plan I get a weekly Greggs, a monthly Vue ticket, Uber One and a railcard that has already saved me over ยฃ90.

Then there is service, which is the part you never want to need. I have never been on hold with Monzo. In-app chat and the self-serve FAQs are genuinely empowering, and that stands above any bank I have used. The Billsback game, double payday draws and getting paid early are small touches, yet they make the whole thing feel considered. For the full picture, read our full Monzo verdict.

Monthly costFree. Extra ยฃ3/mo, Perks ยฃ7/mo, Max from ยฃ17/mo.

StandoutCustomer service and self-serve.
Deposit-takerMonzo Bank Limited, FRN 730427, FSCS-protected.
Watch outThe balance no longer refreshes automatically on app load, the structure is getting cluttered as Monzo adds more, and you still have to post cheques in.

02 For the reassurance

Club Lloyds

Lloyds is the account I have held longest, and while I do not use it daily, I like having it. As a big incumbent it brings branches, easy cheque paying and the reassurance of an institution that is not going anywhere.

Club Lloyds account screen in the Lloyds Bank app showing balance and overdraft

The home screen now shows all your current accounts in one overview, including migrated Halifax ones, then splits savers and current accounts cleanly. My Club Lloyds gives me Disney+ for free, and I have just opened its Monthly Saver at a fixed 8% AER.

It is not all rosy, though. The app is more dated than Monzo, support means hold music and a weak in-app chat, and the online FAQs feel lazy. Still, it is starting to put some love in. I also pair a Lloyds 0% credit card with Airtime Rewards and pick up a little cashback on my shopping.

On top of the perks, Lloyds also runs a refer-a-friend scheme. We currently have a ยฃ50 refer-a-friend link on our Lloyds referral page, so joining through it can pay off if you meet the terms. As always, conditions apply and the offer can change.

Watch outCustomer service is much slower than Monzo, so I would not lean on it for a big-purchase dispute. For those I use American Express.

03 For the cashback

Chase UK

Chase is the one I keep for cashback. It works really well, yet it has felt a bit stale since launch.

Chase UK banking app showing the Spend tab and current accounts overview

The current account is solid, and you can spend from different accounts, but I rarely need to. What has pulled me back recently is the cashback: Chase emailed me offering 2% back if I make at least 15 payments a month and hold a balance. Because it now pays cashback on credit-card transactions too, I may set the card to clear in full monthly and earn 2% instead of the 1% my Amex gives. For the big stuff, though, American Express still wins on service. Being part of J.P. Morgan, Chase also lets me see my JPMorgan Personal Investing balances in the app.

The niggles are real. The in-app spending tracker over-counts and will not let me exclude transactions. Chase also dropped a feature I relied on, paying direct debits from a saver, and it even cancelled those payments on me. Its round-ups have never allowed multipliers either, which is one place Monzo wins. So it is now less great than it was. By contrast, see how it stacks up in Monzo vs Chase.

It is also worth knowing that Chase sometimes runs a joining bonus, either a sign-up offer or a refer-a-friend code. These come and go, so rather than quote a figure that may expire, I keep the current codes on our Chase referral page.

Watch outSupport is app-only and has taken days to reply, and Chase keeps pushing a ยฃ50 Amazon voucher for insurance I do not want.

04 For the design lover

Revolut

Revolut is the most design-led app here. If I were ever tempted to call a bank beautiful, it would be this one.

Revolut app in dark mode showing a savings challenge balance and account controls

What used to feel cluttered has clearly taken cues from Starling and then done it better. Revolut is the most distinct and premium of the bunch, all glass and animation, yet it works reliably. It is also growing up, toning down the endless lists and animated grids. I recently opened its savings at 2.9% AER, which is not thrilling, but there is a Monzo-style prize draw on top, which is a cute touch.

Now the honest bits. The rates are not the best, it can feel overly flashy, and it keeps nudging me toward pricier plans whose perks do not really apply to me. I am also wary of crypto sitting in the same app as a savings pot, because the risks are not obvious to normal people. On protection, Revolut is now a licensed UK bank, but many customers still sit on the e-money entity during migration, and crypto is never FSCS protected.

for the person who wants the best-looking money app and top-tier travel FX

Monthly costFree. Plus ยฃ3.99, Premium ยฃ7.99, Metal ยฃ14.99, Ultra ยฃ55/mo.
InterestStandard savings up to 2.90% AER variable, held via ClearBank and FSCS-protected; a boosted 5% AER variable applies for new savings accounts opened by 4 August 2026, up to ยฃ25,000, until 4 December 2026.
Deposit-takerRevolut Bank UK Ltd, FRN 981170; the e-money entity is Revolut Ltd, FRN 900562.
Watch outThe savings rates lag the market, and the upselling plus crypto placement can feel a touch tech-bro for an everyday account.

A quick, honest note on my Revolut link. The button below is my personal referral link. If you sign up through it, I may receive a referral reward. I am not making any claim about what you get, and this does not change my view above.

Section 02 / Grouped by use case

More accounts worth a place in your setup

Beyond the top four, these earn their spot for a specific job: interest, a switch bonus, or a clean, simple feel.

05 For the interest

Zopa Biscuit

Zopa is the new kid, and I dip into it regularly. It is easily the least designed app here, the opposite of Revolut, but it works fine.

Zopa Biscuit current account in the Zopa app showing balance and quick actions

What keeps me is the money. The Biscuit account pays 2% AER on your balance with no limit, and its linked Regular Saver has given me 7.10% AER. On top, 2% bills cashback (capped) means I moved two bills across, my Octopus energy and my ManyPets pet insurance, and I now earn a couple of pounds a month on them. The in-app Growth hub even tallies it up, which sits at about ยฃ75 for me so far.

for the everyday saver who wants interest and bills cashback without lifting a finger

Monthly costFree.
Interest2% AER variable on the balance; linked Regular Saver 7.10% AER variable, up to ยฃ300 a month for six months.
Cashback2% on up to ยฃ125 of direct debits a month.
AbroadFee-free at the Visa rate.
Deposit-takerZopa Bank Limited, FRN 800542, FSCS-protected.
Watch outThe visual design is basic, and a gimmicky AI payments feature is hard to avoid. Our old Zopa ยฃ10 referral has ended, so there is no sign-up link here.
06 For the loyalty

Nationwide

Nationwide is a building society, not a bank, and it feels the most human of the lot. It rewards loyalty in a way the app banks do not.

Nationwide Building Society app showing FlexPlus, joint account and credit card balances

I hold my mortgage here, plus a FlexDirect current account and a member-exclusive bond. The annual Fairer Share payment, preferential rates and member-only savings all add up. The app is simple yet quietly pretty, above Kroo and Zopa for me, and branch access makes it a real option for anyone who still wants one. It also pairs neatly with Sprive for mortgage overpayments, which I also cover in how Sprive AutoSave works.

for the person who wants to feel like a member, not a number

Monthly costFree.
Switch bonusยฃ175 via the Current Account Switch Service: fully switch from a non-Nationwide and non-Virgin account, move at least two direct debits within 28 days, pay in ยฃ1,000 and make one debit-card payment within 31 days. First Nationwide switch offer only, limited time.
InterestFlexDirect 5.00% AER fixed for 12 months on up to ยฃ1,500 (then 1% variable), plus 1% debit-card cashback up to ยฃ5/mo for a year.
Deposit-takerNationwide Building Society, FRN 106078, FSCS-protected.
Watch outThe intro rates drop sharply after 12 months, and the app is less feature-rich than Monzo.
07 For the minimalist

Starling

Starling is one plenty of people love, so this is just my experience. I had an account, found it quite basic, and in the end I closed it.

Starling Bank app showing account balance and Spending Spaces in green

The bold, simplified balance on the home screen was nice, yet the tab structure confused me. Sadly Starling will not reopen my account, so I cannot say more first-hand. I have heard great things about its joint accounts, which I would have liked to test.

Monthly costFree.
InterestNo in-credit interest on the current-account balance; interest comes via Saving Spaces instead.
Deposit-takerStarling Bank Limited, FRN 730166, FSCS-protected.
Watch outThe tab structure did not click for me, and the current account itself does not pay interest on your balance.
08 For interest on your balance

Kroo

Kroo I first opened for shared payments, then closed it because Monzo shared tabs served me better. Its stronger card is interest on your everyday balance.

Kroo Bank app showing account balance and money pots on a purple background

As an app it is reasonably designed but not a standout, roughly on par with Starling and Zopa. Kroo pays 2.65% AER variable on your current-account balance, which is unusual for a spending account. So if you want your everyday money working while it sits there, Kroo makes a genuine case.

for the person who wants their everyday balance to earn without moving it

Monthly costFree.
Interest2.65% AER variable on the balance up to ยฃ500,000, paid monthly.
Deposit-takerKroo Bank Ltd, FRN 953772, FSCS-protected.
Watch outFor me it did not do enough beyond Monzo, so it became a spare rather than a main account.

The best current account is not a spreadsheet winner. It is the one you trust at the worst possible moment.

Section 03 / The supporting cast

Not current accounts, but they complete the picture

These three are not current accounts, so I have kept them separate. Still, they are the tools I pair with mine, and they change how the whole setup feels.

Wise app at an angle showing US dollar and other currency balances for travel

Wise, for travel and multiple currencies

Wise is my pick when money crosses a border. You can hold 40-plus currencies and convert at the mid-market rate with clear, upfront fees. My favourite feature is paying a bill or a person by uploading a screenshot: the app scans the details and fills the form for you. That is a smart, tangible use of AI, and the others should steal it. Importantly, though, a Wise account is e-money, so it is safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected. Its interest option is an investment product with a fee and capital at risk, not deposit interest. You can read more on our Wise service guide.

Chip savings app at an angle showing a growing savings balance

Chip, for a separate savings pot

For savings kept away from spending, Chip is the best app I have found. I use it for my safety pot, because payments in and out are instant to and from Monzo, so there is no lock-in on an emergency fund. Its Prize Saver, in my opinion, beats Premium Bonds, and setting up regular saving by direct debit was easy. It even offers a bonus if you pay in and hold a set amount. For the wider debate, see Premium Bonds vs investing and grab the details on our Chip referral page. Chip savings are held by ClearBank and FSCS-protected.

Emma app showing everyday, savings, investments and net worth in one place

Emma, for seeing everything in one place

Emma ties it all together. It aggregates my banks, accounts and investments, which is exactly why I skip the spending reports inside each bank app: Emma does it better, with excluded categories and learning. It also links to JPMorgan Personal Investing so I can watch those balances, and I set up Freetrade and Lightyear as offline accounts. The one downside is how pushy it gets about its Ultimate plan, which cheapens the experience. There is a free trial via our Emma premium trial page.

How I compared them

This is a design-and-experience ranking first, not a rate-chasing table. I use most of these accounts myself, so the order reflects how they feel to live with. Then I checked every fee, AER and switch bonus against each provider's own pages before publishing, because bank offers change every few weeks. Where a rate is variable, I have said so. Where an account does not suit me, I have said that too.

All rates are AER and marked variable where variable. Figures checked against each provider's own pages in July 2026. Offers change and can be withdrawn at short notice, so confirm before you apply.

How current account switching works

Switching is far easier than most people expect. The Current Account Switch Service, run by Pay.UK, moves your payments and balance across in seven working days, and its guarantee covers any missed payments during the move. You do not need to close the old account yourself, because the service does it. So chasing a switch bonus like Nationwide's ยฃ175 is low-effort, as long as you meet the conditions. If you like stacking offers, our roundup of the best referral offers in the UK is worth a look. You can read the guarantee in full at the Current Account Switch Service.

Is your money safe?

For the banks and building society here, yes, within limits. Eligible deposits are protected up to ยฃ120,000 per eligible person per UK-authorised bank, building society or credit union by the FSCS (since 1 December 2025). That limit applies per banking licence, so brands that share a licence share the limit. Because I have named the deposit-taker for each account above, you can check who actually holds your money on the FCA Register and the FSCS site.

One caveat matters. An e-money wallet is safeguarded, not FSCS-protected, which is a different and weaker form of cover. Wise is e-money, so it is safeguarded rather than FSCS-covered. Revolut now holds a UK banking licence, yet many customers are still on its e-money entity during the 2026 migration, and crypto is never FSCS protected. So keep large balances with a fully licensed bank, and treat e-money and crypto features accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best current account in the UK?

For me, the best current account in 2026 is Monzo, because the design, the perks and the service all click together. That said, the best current account for you depends on what you value. If you want the biggest switch bonus, Nationwide leads with ยฃ175. If you want interest on your balance, Zopa or Kroo make a stronger case.

Which current account has the best switch bonus?

At the time of writing, Nationwide has the best live switch bonus at ยฃ175 through the Current Account Switch Service. However, you must fully switch from a non-Nationwide account, move at least two direct debits, pay in ยฃ1,000 and make a debit-card payment within the stated windows. Switch offers change often, so always check the provider's own page first.

Are switch bonuses free money?

Not quite. A switch bonus is a genuine incentive, but it always comes with conditions, such as a full switch, a minimum pay-in and active direct debits. Providers can also withdraw offers at short notice. So treat a bonus as a nice extra, not the only reason to move, and make sure the account itself suits you.

Is my money safe in an app bank?

Yes, provided it is a fully licensed UK bank. Monzo, Chase, Zopa, Starling and Kroo are all licensed and FSCS-protected up to ยฃ120,000 per person per banking licence. By contrast, an e-money account like Wise is safeguarded, not FSCS-covered, and crypto is never protected. So check the entity that holds your deposit before you commit a large balance.

Is Halifax becoming Lloyds?

Yes. Lloyds Banking Group announced in July 2026 that it is retiring the Halifax brand and moving customers to Lloyds across 2026 and 2027, with branches rebranding from early 2027. Your sort code, account number and FSCS protection stay the same during the move. So I treat Halifax as becoming Lloyds rather than a separate account in this ranking.

Can I have more than one current account?

Absolutely, and most people benefit from it. I run Monzo as my main account, then keep others for specific jobs: perks, cashback, travel and savings. Because opening a second account is quick, you can chase a switch bonus or a better saver without disrupting your main setup. Just watch any monthly fees and minimum pay-in rules.

More from CoolCuration

The bottom line

There is no single best current account for everyone, and honestly that is the point. I lead with Monzo because it feels the best to use, then lean on Chase for cashback, Zopa for interest, Revolut for design and Nationwide for a switch bonus and a human touch. So build a small stack that fits your life, keep an eye on the fees, and let the switch service do the heavy lifting.

Remember: this is not financial advice, and CoolCuration is not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.
