Why people switch to Octopus (beyond the hype)

Octopus has built a reputation for a more modern energy experience: cleaner account UX, clearer billing, and tariff options that reward flexibility. It is not always the cheapest on every comparison run, but it often wins on day-to-day friction, which is what makes people stick around.

The big pros

• The admin tail can feel longer than the switch: first bills, Direct Debit settling, and account credits can take time even after supply moves over.

Is it actually good value?

A joining perk is nice, but the real test is your annual cost on the tariff you’ll actually use. Compare standing charge and unit rates using your real usage, then decide.

Octopus tends to be best value for EV drivers, off-peak-heavy homes, and households willing to shift usage to match the tariff.

Octopus prices this autumn

Ofgem’s price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 is £1,723 a year for a typical dual fuel home paying by Direct Debit, up from £1,663, according to Ofgem’s announcement. That is the benchmark every figure below is measured against.

Octopus publishes its prices for all fourteen regions, so I priced its fixes at Ofgem’s typical use of 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas.

So an Octopus fix is not a cheap way in this autumn. Its case rests on the flexible and smart tariffs, which carry no exit fee, and on the account experience. For comparison, E.ON Next Pledge promises to stay below the cap, saving £50 a year on average use.

How easy is the switch?

UK supplier switching is designed to be quick and your supply stays on throughout. Ofgem requires the switch within five working days, or the new supplier pays you £40. The “switch” can be fast, but set-up steps like final reads, first bill timing, and Direct Debit alignment can make it feel longer.

Is Octopus worth switching to if I'm on a fixed deal?

Only if the saving beats any exit fees on your current tariff. Many fixes charge per fuel to leave early, so check your contract first. That said, Ofgem rules mean you can switch without an exit fee in the last 49 days of a fixed deal.

How long does it take to switch to Octopus?

Ofgem expects the switch to complete within five working days. However, first bills and Direct Debit set-up can take a few more weeks to settle.

Will my energy supply be cut off when I switch?

No. Your supply stays on throughout, because the same pipes and wires deliver your energy. Only the company billing you changes.

Is Octopus cheaper than the price cap?

It depends on the tariff. This autumn, most Octopus fixes sit above the October cap, while its Flexible tariff moves with the market. So compare unit rates and standing charges against your own usage before deciding.
